Default 2003 Honda Rubicon 500 issues

Good morning. I recently purchased a 2003 Rubicon 500FA knowing the shift angle sensor might be bad. I replaced the sensor but it still gives me the same issue. The sensor calibrates (or at least it sounds like it does) and then when I start it back up everything looks normal. But, as soon as I put it into gear, the transmission indicator starts flashing again and I only have first gear. Also, I cannot get the machine to go into diagnostic mode to see if there are any codes in they system. Any ideas on what to look for?

As a matter of fact, yes. I was finally able to get to it late last week. Apparently someone had spliced two of the wires together for the transmission position sensor. I'm going to try to attach a picture here so you can see the handiwork that I discovered. I don't understand why someone would do this, but once I replace the sensor, everything worked out just fine. Even gave it a quick test run through the woods this weekend
