I put a 14T sprocket on my 2001 300EX. When inspecting the sprocket, I noticed that there was a gold colored piece of steel that bolted on using the same bolts as my sprocket guard. This gold colored piece of steel sits perpendicular to the chain rings. It seems like it is a guard for the lower engine case. The only thing is that now I got this new sprocket on, the gold piece will not fit. Do I need to grind it down or can I do without it? For the time being, it is not on. No problems yet. Has anyone else needed to do this?

The description is a little shakey, but I think you are refering to the stock case saver. This is a pretty good piece to leave intact or purchase an aftermarket one. It in theory, but not always in execution, keeps the chain from hitting the case and breaking it. I would reccommend grinding it down to fit with the larger countersprocket.
