Firstly, on a friendly note. You will never hear an australian say "gas". We don't run ours on gas, we run our on petrol. Minor detail though.

But working on a stock 400ex tank you would be looking at-

US-gallons=3.09 gallons.
AUS- litres=11.3 litres.

Price per litre of petrol (avg)=85cents

=$9.60 for a tank
=price per gallon in america??

To fill your bike in aussie would cost you $4.90usd.

What a bitch.

Actually that's not much different from what I pay, although I use gas and not petrol.

My advice is go with the CR. If you can ride dirtbikes and don't go to all these places, get em. They're faster, cheaper, and fun. I may get one myself when I have the money (and end my quad life??) But if you're set on the ATV (I CAN SEE WHY!), I'd suggest you getting a used one too. Many 400ex's are out for sale cuz some want the Raptor and so many were sold, a lot can't afford them any more or made a poor decision in buying them in the first place. You can get a used one for 4 grand easily.

The simple answer to why quads are so expensive...First lemme say that dirt bikes are cheaper cuz just look at them. Not as much steel, aluminum is used in building them! Well quads are so expensive cuz we still buy them, and with newer and newer technology, they will continue to get more expensive. Until quads hit their technology peak for a good 10 years, which the Cannondales and new Kawa V-twins may have done, prices actually may stabilize or even fall. I expect Cannons to decrease in price because really 8000 is absurd. Quads shouldn't in my mind, no matter how good, be over 7000. But that's just my thought...

Um I didn't even read your message, I doubt I have to... They are expensive because um, I and every one else really wants em... It's really very simple, eventually when the market is truely saturated you may be able to get top quality practical quads for 2,500... If you want to be an ole' man when that time comes.

samhonda: It's too bad that you need a car, I'd rather ride the quad everywhere. There are people in the States that have made their quads street legal so they could ride them on the roads... That might be an option? Street legal kits are made for quads, (less than $2,000 USD) but because of the exchange rate, that would set you back some $$$ also . Too bad you couldn't get a few people together and get several shipped to you and save some money?
