I have an 86 250r.It still has the original clutch.I think it is on the way out.

When ever U first let the clutch out.Right when it starts to grab it makes a noise. At first I thought it was clutch chatter but now I don't know.It makes kind of like a grinding sound. The clutch doesn't slip and it shifts fine. But this noise is killing me!I hate it when there is a strange noise.IT only does it sometimes to.

IT is out of gas now so I guess I am going to take the sidecasing off and find out.

But what do U guys think it souns like?

Well if it does it in all gears I would think maybe the basket bolt is loose or something to that nature, but if it only does it in certain gears its your tranny. You could put it in neutral and let the clutch out. if it grinds its definetly your clutch. Thats a sure way.

Well I just got done taking the sidecasing off.

The clutch plates look fine still.Could it be that the springs are not as tight as they where originally?

We just rebuilt the whole tranny 2 years ago.Every fork, gear, washer everything was replaced.SO I don't think that that is the problem.

IT is hard to explain. As soon as U feel the clutch grab it makes a noise like a grinding noise only for a second though. Most poeple probably can't hear it.(none of my freinds could)But I can and it makes me worry.

It still shifts fine.Finds neutral easy and it doesn't slip. But this noise is making me crazy.MY BABY IS SICK!

Well man this may sound like total BS but my quadsport did the same. it turned out when I let out the clutch the clutch arm would vibrate the rear disc caliper because the disc was warped. Have someone hold it while you work the clutch. Also check the clutch basket needle bearing for excessive play or noise.

As long as you have the side cover off, check the ball bearing in the end of the lifter rod; it may be siezed.
As long as you're putting a new clutch in, up grade to the 88 style lifter rod/pressure plate/bearing.

I just ordered this 89 update, I got tired of the ball seizing on me, but what difference will I feel? The pull is pretty hard complared to a 400ex. I ordered the cable and lifter arm too.

With a new cable and lifter rod upgrade it should just be smoother. If you also installed a new clutch, yeah, it's gonna be harder to pull than a 400EX. Try an ezpull clutch lever.

don't bother with the 88 style, its the same stupid ball setup, get the '89 clutch update kit from Honda or Nacs, it has a flat needle bearing instead of the troublesome ball bearing.

I just installed the 89 update, it's a definite must do to any pre 89 250R.
