fourtrax 300 ..just how good is it????

I am assuming you are talking about the 300EX.
As to reliability, its bulletproof. Just change the oil and clean the air filter, and you are set.
Top speed is around 50-60 mph. Not the fastest, but fast enough.
It is an excellent jumper for a stock machine. You can build some pretty good jumping machines, but the 300EX will do fine for someone just starting into quading.
It will climb hills just fine.
However, the 300EX doesn't include racks or a tow hitch. Nor would you want to pull a trailer with it anyways.
So for camping or hunting, it will do for transportation of you and a backpack. It is pretty quiet for hunting, so there is a plus.
If you are talking about the Fourtrax 300 4x4, everything I have said except the jumping and the racks are true.
The Fourtrax 300 4x4 is a great small machine for hunting or camping. I just wouldn't jump it or use it for really 'sporty' riding. Racks are fine, and you can put a hitch on it. And they are also bulletproof. For a 300 cc quad, its a great machine.

The Honda 300 2wd is a very good all-around machine. You will be hard pressed to find a more reliable quad. Top speed is around 45 mph. Small jumps are no problem (maybe 1' or 2' tall), but any more and it's 480+ Lbs. will catch up to you. With an ultra-low first gear and tons of low-end torque, it can crawl up just about any hill it can get traction on, short of insanely steep ones. I have an '88 2wd and a '99 4wd, and I have taken the 2wd places it really shouldn't have been able to go without 4wd.
You won't be disappointed with it's performance, unless you want 90mph top speed or need to traverse 3' of mud.

The 300 2wd is an excellant choice for your intended riding. I bought a new one in July and have been very happy with it. The steering will be heavier and it won't be as quick as your friends 300ex but it is still a lot of fun for trail riding. You can probably get a good deal on one since everyone is going to want the new Rancher.

i just bought a 300 4x4, and it's been wonderful, what everyone said is pretty much true.. reliable, low gear, and straight up just about anything.
though, my recommendation would be go for the 4x4... can't tell you how many times i think myself for getting it... if u start going down a bad hill you shouldn't be,, a 4x4 can always reverse out.. 2x4 can rarely go reverse up an extreme incline. also it's climbing ablity is better, better traction, and more weight on the front.. so u don't have to worry as much about flipping.
otherwise it's a tough machine... though not a good jumper... but i never thought a 4x4 300 would be or wanted it to be.
