Okay, I like the 400ex but it doesnt have reverse. Im not lazy but Im use to having reverse on my fourtrax300. Did reverse make that much difference when you guys bought your 400ex? Im riding on trails by the way. Thanks!

Others say reverse isn't needed. No it's not, but now that I have it on my 650 it sure is nice.

Well I like my reverse. That phrase was just made up for the lack of a reverse"REAL MEN DONT NEED REVERSE". I really don't use the the reverse all that much except where its o so nice to hit that turn button. Its like a breath of fresh air hitting you in reverse. Chet

Well, every salesguy at my Honda dealership acted like it was a joke that the 400ex did'nt have reverse... especially for those (...including myself...) that want one to ride the trails with. I really want to buy a 400ex but they were trying to convince me to go with the 300ex for trail riding. I know plenty of riders that use a 400ex but Ive never asked about the reverse issue, or how well they are for trails. Any advise... thanks!

dont buy the 300 instead of the 400 just because of reverse. the 400ex is an awesome trail quad.

It all depends on your priorities and riding conditions. Where I live reverse is important since the trails are tight and wooded and a lot of times it is much easier to back out of a tight trail than get off, drag the rearend around all the while getting poked with devils club and salmonberry bushes.

On my vacation I rode at Oregon dunes. It was the first time in my life I had ever ridden in sand dunes and I could see that reverse wasn't too critical. However, when my wife got the rental 250ex stuck on a sand trail in a wooded area, reverse was pretty nice.

My vote, all sport quads should have reverse. Race quads can go without reverse. Funny thing is, the 400ex is no race quad even though people use them for that. Then you look at the old 250r and you'd think reverse would be absurd.

Where I ride reverse is absolutely needed. I think it just depends on where you ride. Otterbob, why isnt the 300EX an awesome trail bike? I know I get around the woods just as fast as anyone else. I think I have only topped out in 5th gear once. Yes I wish there was a little more but I dont ever get up that fast but when do I ever get up that fast? Very very rarely. But like I said it all depends on where you ride.

Well, I like the 400ex because of power and also because knowing me, I always want more power. Where I ride is also tight woods and rarely an opurtunity to open up to 5th. The 300ex is less than the 400ex and I know id see a difference on a MX track but is there that much difference between the two if Im riding trails?
