a question for recon owners

Honda recomends that you have the dealer change your oil filter. why is this? if anyone out their changes their own oil, what is involved in changing it that would require a dealer? thanks for any replies.

Actually there is no "filter" on the Recon. The engine has an internal oil screen and a centrifugal filter that you have to take the front crankcase cover off to get to. There is nothing to replace, you just clean it, and isn't hard to do if you know what you're doing. If you want to try it I'd suggest getting a service manual.

moto93,
Where is the location on the engine where this screen filter is located? I know there is a bolt on the backside on the underneath part of the engine near and just below (17mm bolt) where the driveshaft comes out that looks excatly like the oil drain bolt. I always wondered what that bolt was for. Chet

Chet,
The screen filter is located inside the engine below the clutch. You have to take the front of the engine off to get to it. I've done this on my Son's 90 (it's a similar set-up) and it was a waste of time as there was nothing in it to clean.
About the bolt, from what I've been able to see in my service manual it's just another drain plug. The manual doesn't say anything about it but it shows several pictures of it from inside the engine. Maybe next time I change the oil I'll try draining the motor from it. I hate how the oil runs all down the frame from the other plug!
Hope this helped,

moto93,
All I can say is if your looking at a used Recon and it isn't a mess under the engine then the oil hasn't been changed much. Mine is a mess under there. Thanks for looking into that 17mm bolt. I am going to try that location myself on the next oil change. I thought I would take my floor jack and lift the front end up so there is an incline and use the rear drain plug and hopefully there would be no mess. Thanks, Chet
