Dealers are all alike, they don't want to fix chit but want you to buy the whole piece for profit!
I couldn't buy a replacement part for my starter and they told me I had to buy the whole starter at $423.00 a pop! I ordered all my parts I needed for my 99 Wolverine and its going to run me over $600.00 after all is said and done. I'm going to take my old starter and get the broken teeth resplined by a machinist and keep as a spare. Parts I ordered are starter, gear 2, and universal joint (front)..

Why not check with a junk yard? I'm sure that they'll have the complete hubs there. A stud is about a $.50 part at the absolute most. Heck I work as a diesel mechanic and when I change tires on semi's the studs come out of the hubs all the time. It shouldn't be that big of a deal. Having to pay over $100 just for one stud is nuts! I could see paying $70 or $80 but even then that's expensive. I'm sure you could pop the studs out of a hub from a junk quad and use them. $113 is just plain rediculous!!!

To skywolf75: The dealer doesn't manufacture the parts! How is it his fault that the OEM [not the dealer] sells the part as one piece? As for your starter, the shaft is NOT sold seperately fron the starter. He didn't tell you that to rip you off by selling you a complete starter.[although that price is WAY above Yamaha's sugg. list] You are doing the right thing by taking it to a shop who can repair it, for it simply isn't worth the money when it can be fixed cheaper. I agree with you on that but not the accusation that the DEALERS are to blame for parts being sold as one piece. They don't even have a say as to how it is sold. The OEMs are simply going to build a part as cheap as they can and sell it for as much as they can. That's just part of the business, however I think your Dealer is outrageous on the price for that starter. I will look it up for you in a few minutes and will post back on here in a few minutes with Yamaha's sugg. list. Mention this price to your dealer and he WILL meet it or risk you telling all your buds about how he's taking you guys money. Check back afterwhile. KNOWSALOT.

Well that didn't take as long as I thought it would. I actually have that fiche on CD Rom at home. The part# is 4KB-81890-00-00 and Yamaha's suggested list is $218.06. Which is less than HALF of what your dealer wanted. And no, that is not cost, trust me, he is still making a pretty penny selling it to you at list price. The "Mark Up" dealers have actually been dying out the last few years since the internet craze hit. You can get access to everything from cost on machines to cost on parts and sugg. list on parts. It is harder for them to justify the price when they know that you know what it is supposed to sell for. There used to be a dealer in these parts that done that and he now carries only one brand. He used to have FIVE! Parts under $100 hardly ever have much mark up from any OEM and usually will see all dealers adding a big mark up which is justifyable to make money. I do the same thing, but I will not sell ANY part over $100 above what the OEM says it should sell for. Good luck with your "TIGHT" dealer. KNOWSALOT.

Hey knowsalot, thanks for the info. but I'm wondering if it makes a difference because of the fact that I'm in Canada? Oh yeah, your right that its not the dealers fault that they have to sell the whole starter and what I meant to say is that the OEM people are to blame, but if what you say about the listed price and the price the DEALER is charging me is true, then I rest my case! The fact that I have to pay so much just for the starter makes me want to sell my machine. All I know is that if another major component goes again I'm going to sell the dam thing because I'll have paid my machine again just in repairs! I know things break but you shouldn't have to pay such rediculous prices for parts from the company you bought your bike from..
