I am having a problem with my 98 300EX. I think it is the axle bearings, but i am not 100% sure it might be the disk brake there is definatly something grinding. It was weird i was riding along and all the sudden out of nowhere there is this grinding noise so i stoped and i figured it was the sporket or something toching the skid plate but, nope i slowly rode it home and i am wondering what to do. I am taking it to get it serviced in a few days, but i can't go without riding for that long, but i may have to!

It sounds like your back brake pads are worn out. I hade the same thing happen to me. on a 98' 300EX too, how odd. Don't ride it until you get new ones becouse the metal rubbing will grind down your disc rotor.

their are 2 bolts that hold the rear brake caliper on. remove them and set the caliper on the swingarm and roll the quad back and forth. if the noise stops its the brakes if not its the bearings probably. hope i could help. CB400EX, 99 400EX

I'm betting it is the axle bearings - I had the exact same symptom on my 250R shortly after I bought it. Don't ride it till you are sure - you could easily go from needing a new set of bearings (about $50) to needing a whole new axle carrier AND bearings (anywhere from $150-$350). Another check for the bearings - put rear of bike on a stand and grab both back tires. Try to wobble the axle in the axel carrier. If there is any movement you'll need at least new bearings and seal.

good luck!
