My 250R motor has recently started a strange problem. Ever so often when taking off in first from a dead stop, while letting out the clutch, it suddenly lurches forward instead of being smooth and makes a rough sounding noise. Also when you lug the motor in a high gear, I can feel a new vibration I haven't felt before. Is this a common problem with the R motor? I suspect it is somewhere in the clutch basket as it is the original basket. The clutch plates/springs are new, has a new crankshaft assembly, recent new top end. I noticed the problem in between the clutch/crank rebuild (one year ago) and the recent top end job. Any insight or help will be appreciated.

Thanks
Keenan

Sounds like the same thing that just happened to my 86 250r the clutch basket was cracked. You might want to take your right side cover off and look at the clutch basket mine was in pices look for cracks or any thing that might look weird. Maybe the gear on the back of your clutch basket it goofed up. I would take the cover and have a look though.

The vibration in high gear is not a common problem but the clutch not releasing smooth is most likely a worn clutch basket . The first thing I would do is drain the transmission oil and inspect the oil for pieces . If you are unsure if any pieces of metal flakes are aluminum or steel , run a magnet through the oil. Next remove the clutch side cover and clutch and inspect the clutch basket for notches in it where the clutch plates ride. Also don't overlook the clutch inner hub . The inner hub will show signs of wear from the steel plates. Replace any worn parts and for smooth clutch action install an 89 clutch update kit.

I agree with 87250r88, it sounds like a problem with the clutch basket. You definitley want to do the clutch upgrade, it works a lot better for less wear and smoother clutch action.

If in fact you are correct in saying the clutch basket is the original one, your basket is going to be grooved up pretty bad. Order a new one, best one for the money is Performance Engineering's clutch basket for $129.
