400EX v 650Prarie

Area 51, the 650 is an awesome sport utility but every 4 wheeler has pros and cons. I personally woundn't trade my sport quad just yet.

The P650 has great acceleration, a good mudder(w\prop tires), and for pulling hills from an almost dead start(this one is a killer for the sport quad). I have rode a lotttt of miles on my 300ex with the P650, and have gone everywhere it has gone(minus a few mudd puddles).

The sport quads are very agile and quicker in the woods. On a long twisty trail, the quad will excell and the guy on the 650 will have his tounge hanging out and an arm pump(HaHa!). The heavy foreward ballance of the P650 is nice for some things, but will bite you when it comes to down hill off camber situations(ouch).

So lets keep things in perspective, I started this thread just curious how the 400's would keep up on the long straits!

I HAVE A PRAIRIE 650, MY BEST FRIEND HAS A 400EX, IT'S PIPED AND JETTED. ON GPS--- I GET 69.6MPH OUT OF THE PRAIRIE, HE GETS 70.3MPH OUT OF THE 400EX. IN A DRAG RACE HE LOSES ALL THE TIME, PAVEMENT, GRASS, HARDPACK, IT DOESN'T MATTER. THE PRAIRIE IS BONE STOCK, THE 400EX ISN'T. A PRAIRIE 650 WILL BEAT A STOCK 400EX. THE ONLY THINGS THAT I HAVE FOUND THAT WILL BEAT ME IN A DRAG ARE, BANSHEE(IF IT HOOKS UP AT ALL, I BEAT ONE ALREADY BEACUSE HE HAD ZERO TRACTION),RAPTOR,DS650. THEY ARE THE ONLY THINGS THAT I HAVE RACED THAT STAYED WITH ME OR BEAT ME. WARRIORS, 300EX'S DON'T HAVE A CHANCE AT ALL. JUST THOUGHT I WOULD ADD MY .02 .[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img]

GTV,

I believe that the Prairie's front to rear ratio is 47%-53%. I have had it on some steep hills and it kicks rear end in my opinion. But this is my first quad and I have nothing to compare it against. But its low center of gravity is best among quads and I have had no problem on hills going up or down. And I am talking the western ND badlands that ol' T. Roosevelt rode it.

IVE RACED TWO PRAIRIE650 ON MY 400EX AND THEY LOST EVERY TIME. HOW COULD YOU PRAIRIE GO 69.9MPH IT HAS A GOVEREN AT 100KM???

Mine goes 68 mph according to the gauge with stock tires. I have not GPS'd it yet. But many of the 650 owners are going 63-69 mph. I wish the 650 was less governed as my power really decreases at 50 mph with a SLOW climb to 68 mph. Rumor has it that it was governed because the torque caused structural damage in the frame. Great engine.

One ride on the P-650 and you will fall in love with that V-twin engine, I never knew how much stronger and smoother a V-twin is when compared to to a single of the same displacement. A P-650 has about 43Hp at the crank and 32 Hp at the rear wheels, a 400ex has about 32Hp at the crank and 28 Hp at the rear wheels, so based on that the 400ex should beat the P-650 because of the power to weight ratio and the Hp loss through the drivetrain on the P-650 if both could get the same traction.

A DS 650 has roughly 52 hp at the crank. It is a single cylinder 650. I definitely believe the Prairie to be smoother, but stronger?

Talking about utility engines, your DS650 is a lot stronger in sport form, but how about the utility Bomb 650?

TrailHog, I am not an automatic fan(they work amazeingly well though) while you are doing the math, don't forget to take about 3/4 of a second drive traine hook up from the 400EX for 3 gear changes, if takeing of in 2nd. While us clutch lovers are banging gerars, the Prarie is stedily pulling.

Just thought I'd add some more variables..
