I recently purchased a 1994 model fourtrax 300 4x4. I had been wanting an ATV again. As a boy I had a 4 wheeler and enjoyed countless hours on it. Now that I am grown and have a wife and 2 children I think back to that boy and the things I done on that atv and it scares me! I am not near as stupid as I was back then. What age will do to you. Anyway, I have been wanting another one for the past few years and with the family just could not afford one. I finaly come across one at the HOnda shop which is owned by my fathers good friend. He knew of the 4 wheeler and said even though it was a 94 model it was still a good unit. It looked like it had been taken care of considering it was a 94. YOu can tell it is used however. I met the guy who traded it in and he told me that I was getting a good 4 wheeler. He said he was trading it in just because he wanted something bigger. The mechanic at the shop said it looked as if it had set in a building most of the time. I am thrilled with it! Also my first Honda! My big question is: How long can I expect to get out of this 4 wheeler before it starts to breakdown? How durable are these particular models? I was riding a couple days ago and noticed that every time I geared down from a fast speed the idle would try to go and the 4wheeler would quit. This happened some times and other times I would goose the throttle and it would pick up and not quit. I'm no mechanic and would love to know what this could be so I can get it fixed. Any one know? Thanks

Our group drives Honda 350's 450's and 300's...Polaris 335, Sportsman 500's....Suzuki Eiger....Yamaha Big Bear, Kodiak....the 4 Honda 300 4x4's in the group are consistently the most reliable of the bunch...apart from a bearing every now and then, they give absolutely zero trouble...never...they are a great reliable machine.

The Honda 300 4x4 machines are one of, if not THE, most reliable machines ever to grace God's green earth. I purchased an '88 300 4x4 back in '89 and rode it up until two years ago. Never had anything ever go wrong with it. It went through a couple sets of tires and some grips, but mechanically that quad was bulletproof.

You should have no worries.

Since the machine has sat a lot....I would say the carb needs cleaned.
As earlier posted.....the old 3004X4 is the most reliable quad ever made. One thing to change frequently is the rear end oil.....I have seen and heard of numerous rear end gear sets going out. Another thing that aids this problem is they will occasionally leak at the pumpkin / axle junction......only after much use though. Congrats, very dependable, durable quad.

Gary is right. About the only repeat problems with the 300s are the rear differentials. Proper maintenance will keep it up. Keep the oil changed frequently and replace bad bearings as soon as you notice them. Especially keep an eye out for the fronts and the right rear on behind the brake drum. These go out the most common.

Like Gary said, I would clean the carb first. You may not have a p[roblem now, but cleaning it will at least, give you peace of mind in the future if anything crops up.

The TRX300 [2wd & 4wd] ARE the most dependable quads ever built and still hold the sales record for an individual model. Not only for the model's lifespan, but for yearly sales as well.

You picked a good one.

I just purchased a 300, 2x4, great condition. I thought the rear end was maintaince free? I change the differential oil every 4 months, bottom end oil 1 month. Im glad to hear I own the most reliable quad ever . Now I need a 400ex!

ps, honda should bring back the 300. only with a few improvements such as, 450cc, way more shock travel with independant suspention, 2wd/4wd switch, but leave everything else the same

Default Durability of my new Fourtrax 300 4x4?

I also own a Honda 300 4x4, its a 1997, and I couldn't be more happy with it. Then only things I had to fix on it were things done to it. It was hit by a snowmobile it the front and bent up the a-arm, but as for mechanically nothing has gone wrong but the starter on it. But I think it is an overall good investment. It is, as said before by others, one of the most reliable ones out there.

The 300 is about as bulletproof as a quad can get, I could never tear mine up.
