I ride with a group of guys that includes 4 2001-2002 recons..Every time we go thru a puddle or mudhole they start misfiring..The spark plug boots are packed with dielectric grease..Seems to be a problem in front of the left rear tire where mud is building up on coil ??? Another possibility is the hose coming of the carb?? Any recon owners have a solution?? My buddies are all frustrated with this ,,happens every time ...Has to be a problem with all recons,,4 new ones all having the exact same problem.

I read in Dirt Wheels a couple of years ago someone having that problem with water crossings, turned out to be a bad fitting boot on the top of the carb where the throttle cable goes in,a little RTV and the problem went away, try sealing that area up and see if it helps. I had a 98 Recon, and never had a problem, and my son was a real u boat commander (puddle diver).

My buddy has a 98 recon that when he got in the water, it would just quit. We would have to drag it out and it took a while to refire. Being the ahole friend that I am, when he would die in the middle of the water, we would drive past him and spray him with water. Great fun. We always thought the problem was the spark plug boot. Another suggestion would be to plug the drain tube on the carb. I have heard that the valve will leak and let water get into the carb and ultimately kill the engine. This would explain my buddies problem since his only died when the water was up near the carb. Your buddies problems sounds more electrical than water in the gas.

Believe to have fixed one Recon,,,there is a hose coming off the carb going up to a " box " part of the frame and it is packed with mud and water..Re-routed the hose to where dirt and water could not get into hose and ran it thru a deep hole and it ran ok..Followed with another Recon and it sputtered,,missed .. Is some kind of breather tube getting dirt and water in it,,routed it up by the handlebars..Well see if it works after riding in the woods..
