It's difficult to determine when and how often to replace packing. On my T4 (FMF silencer) I replaced the packing when I bought it because the previous owner said he had the silencer on for more than 5-6 years and never repacked it. The quad sat for 2 of those years. Anyway, the packing looked aged and some of it was stuck to inner pipe due to dried unburned premix. After replaceing it, it did not sound any different from before. I ride about 2-3 times a month, BTW.

If the packing on your silencer has not been replaced in a year or two, I say replace it. As far as how often...once every year or two is good. It really doesn't matter because even if you replace the packing every six months, it won't break the bank. Repacking is cheap!
