Alaska,
That sounds like an interesting project. The CRF230 should have quite a bit more pep than the old XR200. I rode a BBR project bike awhile back which was a CR125 frame with a XR200 engine stroked to a 220cc engine. It really had more power than i what I expected. It's close to an XR250.
One other thing. The current XR200R and CRF230F engines are related to the 1983-1985 ATC200X engines and not the 1986-1987 engines. The exact same topend but slightly different transmissions.[and a backward motion kick starter]. The engine mounts are also the same. These engines can be found on 1980-1984 XR200....1981-1983 XR200R.....and 1986-2002 XR200R
The 1984-1985 XR200R engines were really trick for a 200cc. They had the same RFVC head as the larger XRs and 400EX!!!!! Why they then went back to the old design is anyone's guess.
The only motorcycle to use the engine design found on the 1986-1987 ATC200X was the 1986-1987TR200 FatCat and the 1990-1997 TRX200 TypeII models. All these engine had the topend of the ATC200X, but had an auto clutch transmission.....even the FatCat.

Barlett, you have the YZF426 mixed up with the CRF450. The 426 is the pig to start when it's hot! MY 426 had to use the hot start button to start everytime the motor was hot and it still wouldn't start the first or second kick like the CRF450 DOES EVERYTIME. Hey, here's some weird news: Honda is {says a regional sales mgr./rep for Honda} making a 600EX! Why not a 650 XR motored quad? It just doesn't make sense, but I'm sure it rocks.

KNOWSALOT,
I stand corrected, thanks for clearing up the ATC/XR geneology for me. I guess my only question (if/when I build another play quad) is this: can the '84-85 XR200R four-valve head be fitted on the CRF230F cylinder? Now that would have some seriously play quad potential...

kick starting the 450f in a quad frame is worthless !!! imo it is a huge waste of time . yes it is a fast motor -no dought- one mistake of killing it and your from first to last. these motors are hard to start .
got a chance to ride a 450f quad and the only thing i didnt like was that i was tired after kicking the pig over !!!
Hmm.. I've ridden one... I kicked it once on a bike stand and it busted off. You guys want HP? Ride a 450F. It is UNBELIEVABLE. It cranks 1st kick mostly every time. I'd rather have a kickstart than electric anyday!
Just drop me a line when your battery goes dead.. I'll come over and pull you home.

<< Why don't you just shut your trap Yodaddy? Everybody in the Cannondale section got sick of you, so you come and start badmouthing Honda? You really don't have a whole lot to contribute, so again, please just shut up. >>
WTF? Actually I don't know of anyone in the C-dale forum that got sick of me. Are you that upset that the guys at Honda are to scared to release a REAL high power quad? You shouldn't take it so hard... it's no suprise.
Looks like dunerunner026 is one of the only guys here that actually seems to understand.
You need to grow up ridzhard... Honda isn't the best thing to hit the dirt and everytime they produce a new bike or quad, they rape all of the potential of being the best out of it.
HONDA IS, ALWAYS HAS BEEN, AND ALWAYS WILL BE SCARED!!!

I ride a Honda, and am not scared of anything. I will admit that Honda has not built anything awe inspiring, but dollar for dollar, it is hard to beat the wing. Your Cannondale is a nice quad, but I have personally seen them beat by 416 and 440 EX's on the dunes and tracks.

I didn't say Honda RIDERS are scared. Hell, my best friends all ride Honda's and guys like Tim Farr, Ricky Carmicheal, and LOTS of local riders are riding Honda's and there isn't anything wrong with that. What I'm really saying is racing is an EXPENSIVE sport and it would be nice if people could work on suspension mods (a-arms, axle, shocks) and not have to spend all their money making the motor worth a **** because the manufacturer is to scared to put some power in it. Why is making a full race Cannondale cheaper than making a full race R or EX??? Because Cannondale's have lots of power stock and then a pipe and remapping ($200) will give it lots more (and it even out runs quads with more power due to how fast it revs like a 2-stroke and holds traction like a 4), so all you really have to do is make it wider, buy better shocks, and some tires, and handlebars, and you're set. With a Ex, you gotta buy all that and then get a 440 kit, high comp. piston, cam, rev box, and numerous other motor mods.
I'm not bashing Honda... I'm just bringing up the fact that Honda "bashes" us quad riders by thinkin we aren't worth the extra effort.
I'm really not trying to **** people off but it seems like everyone thinks that Honda is just gonna get up and throw out a quad that pumps out 50+ horses, and I guess I just get frustrated that people don't seem to use any common sence. They haven't done it in 15 years, they won't give us that now.
