1988 300TRX Acceleration Problem
#1
My TRX has always run great. Last week my son told me that it had been cutting out on him for no apparent reason. Now it cranks fine but dies as soon as you give it any gas. My 8 yr son ( who thinks he's a mechanic) noticed a hose running from the bottom of the carburetor that was not connected to anything. He thinks reconnecting it will solve the problem but, unfortunately, I can't find any thing that it looks like it should connect to and think it may just be a vent hose. Am I missing something simple? I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts.

tell your son he is a little smart azz because that hose is a overflow for the carb bowl so when you stand the quad up on end it wont flood as far as your problem take the bowl off your carb and check the float it might have a hole in it of you might have a pluged jet

Also check your air filter and air box to see if there are any type of obstructions that may be restricting the air flow. Dirt dobbers are also known for building nests in the air intake tube of the bikes. You may also want to make sure that the choke is not stuck in the ON or HALF position. Check these things and it should start narrowing down your search.
As for your son, tell him that the tube is supposed to be loose, but it was a good suggestion (from an 8 year old). Also, tell him to keep looking and that you appreciate his help (even though your hair may be falling out). Keep him interested.
Good luck!!

I would check the following:
1. Choke position/operation, is it on? is it working?
2. Fuel filter under fuel petcock, may be stopped up.
3. Air filter/intake tract, make sure filter is cleaned and oiled, no restrictions into carb (and also in the snorkle leading to the airbox).
4. Try clearing the spark arrestor by removing the bolt and scraping out any carbon buildup.
5. Make sure it has gas (I'm serious, everyone has done this at least once, usually after trying every other conceivable option).
And yes, that is most likely a vent hose from the carb, but at least your son is trying to help!
