i just installed a 55 watt reverse light on a 300 4x4 fourtrax . it works great and only when you put the bike in reverse at night . if anyone wants the info just reply to this.

I did the same with the 55 watt bulb, but it pulls a lot of current and dims my headlamps to some degree.
Warn has come out with a pair of auxillary headlamps and a rear backup light. They all use 21 watt bulbs, but are supposed to be very bright due to the reflector used. But, the draw on the battery is a lot less than lights designed for auto applications. They have rubber seals to protect the light assembly, but are vented to prevent fogging and allow moisture to escape. They have 26 degree beam spread. The field of illumination (for the trail lights-fronts)begins at 6.5 feet in front of the atv and extends to 75.5 feet. The beam pattern is specifically designed for an ATV. They have AAS body and polycarbonate lenses that are impact, shock and heat resistant. The fronts come with a toggle switch for the handlebars and the rear hooks into the reverse light circuit.

i made a mistake in my previous post. i have a 35 watt not a 55 watt light on the back, but still i have a 100 watt light up front and still my headlights do not dim at all??? sounds like you have a weak alt.
here is the wiring procedure
1... locate and tap your power wire for your light into the power wire for the rear brake light. this enables you to have +12v only when the headlights are on(nighttime)
2... locate the reverse light indicator switch . i believe it is on the right side of the bike. this switches ground fore you . run your ground wire to this and install a diode inline with it. point the diode band end toward the switch. this is what is going to turn your light on when you are in reverse only at night. the diode is to prvent ground from the light bulb in the reverse light being falsly sent to the reverse light indicator switch. the diode can be bought at radio shack for under one dollar. just get a 12volt diode or 50volt. it will not matter. it acts like a check valve in hydraulics.
this should do it. it took very little time to do(once i firgured out a few details,lol)

by the way the light i used was a fog light for a car from wal-mart. it was 40.00 for two and me and a bud slit it. 21.00 is the total cost and that is hard to beat.

 

When I said dim, I did not mean to infer it was to a point of being unusable, but that you could, indeed tell that the 55 watt light had been swithced on and was drawing current. More current than I want to know is being drawn. That is why I think I will like the 2 bulbs drawing 21 watts with a much better reflector system and hopefully, much more light.

 

you don't by chance have any pictures on the web of where you mounted it do you?

 

I mounted both brake and backup light to my King Quad using red and clear double bulbed running lights.

I have both pictures and schematic if anyone is interested.
