How close of a race is it now? If you are close in the first couple of gears a cheap experiment would be putting the 15t front sprocket back on. Also smaller tires with the same gearing is slower. However, smaller tires with higher gearing would help eliminate some unsprung weight and also reduce the load on the motor.

Are you dragracing or what? If you are drag racing you will have better luck with the stock front sprocket.
What jetting are you running in the carb? Air box cover on or off?

Zillarider02 has a 2002 400ex, stock gearing, E-series Sbend,18 discs, no airbox cover, Uni foam, 160 main jet, clip lowered one notch. I see him outrun a couple Z400's. I helped with the jetting on that bike and I can tell you there is a big difference in the way that engine runs when you get it right. Seat of the pants is very deceptive, we resorted to a stop watch over a fixed distance to find the best combo.

shaneb is right. If you are draggin aganist a z400, you have to go for the holeshot. The z has a pretty potent top end and if you don't get the holeshot your in trouble.

My other best bet to sticking with the z is to powershift. And some better rear tires!
