250ex

It is basically the same thing as the Recon but with different plastic, tires, and suspension. If you look into the reliability of the Recon motor it would show what you have to expect from the 250EX motor. My Recon has been a nice running machine. The only reason I would consider buying another quad is for more speed. The 250EX is a good beginner quad because of the semi auto and low maintenance.
It seems like alot of atv rentals are using the 250EX's.

They are a great quad. I have only sold dress up parts for them. No hard parts and there is alot of them around here. They are NOT like a Recon. They have disk brakes up front, differnt transmission gearing, differnt head, cam, pistion and so on. They look alot alike untill you start looking at the two side by side then you will see all the difference.

The 250EX has been developed from the Recon. I know that the 250EX has disc brakes and different gearing (First 3 gears are the same as the Recon and then 4th and 5th are different) even though I didn't think to list them. It was also my understanding that in 2002 Honda improved the Recon motor to be like the 250EX. The 2002 Recon is a little faster than my 2001. The main part of the motor, driveshaft, rear brake, semi-auto(no clutch), and frame is EXACTLY like the Recon. My point was that 4rider could get an idea how reliable the 250EX will be by looking at the history of the Recon that came out in 1997. While the 250EX came out in 2001. The Recon and 250EX have 90% more in common than say the Rancher, Foreman, 300EX etc... and the 250EX. Oh yeah the gas tank is a little larger on the 250EX(2.7gal.). Recon(2.4) The 250EX is also a little faster and lighter. (377lbs.compared to 397lbs.for 2001) But it is still very much like the RECON in other ways.

I've had mine 2 years. Bought it primarily for my girls to drive, but dad loves it too. It's a blast in tight stuff. Small, light, tight turning with a good bottom end. I prefer an autoclutch for going through tight stuff. Don't have to ride a clutch.
The weight is listed as 350 dry, not 377 as someone mentioned. To restate what I like:
4 Stroke
Light (350#)
Shaft Drive
Auto Clutch
Good Clearance
RELIABLE
Looks
Reverse (and easy to use)
What I would change:
More power
Little wider stance (but you can get wheel spacers)
I love mine, but if I had bought one strictly for me to ride, I would have bought the 300EX or 400EX (or a Z400).

hey, i got a 2003 model last wednesday, rode it twice and it is a brilliant machine. i had never rode a manual before so having the semi-auto was very easy, it took about 10mins for me to get used to shifting the gears and i think its fast enough for the trials, and it rides over anything and i mean ANYTHING! im not saying that because i have one, just compared to my other quads and mates quads, they get stuck now and again and i had to pull my mate out of the mud the other day because his got stuck and wouldnt move, so yea, if you want something easy to ride and not to overaly fast then get the 250, but if you want more speed, then go for the 350 or 400, i was going to get the 350 but its illegal here in britian plus they are alot more expensive, in us currency a 250 is be around $6500 so i think the 350 is a no pricewise anyway, but thats britain for you lol! im very happy with my 250, hope ive helped and have fun with what quad you get!

The 250EX is spectacular at doing what it is made for, recreational and play riding on trails. It has unbeatable quality and reliability, which is why it is so popular with rental shops. The maintenance couldn't be simpler. It is light and handles great, even better with improved front tires. Another in the long line of perfectly executed honda quads. BUT... if I were shopping one right now I'd wait a few weeks for the Suzuki Z250, and compare. The Zuk is upposed to have better power and suspension. So they say...
