Default 1988 300 trx

I'm new to the atv world and I just picked up this 300 trx for a few $$$ and it ran great for a while. It's a great help around the house and a new Honda or Polaris 4x4 is a near future purchase. Until then, I need some help.

The machine started "missing". I put a clean plug in and there was no change... The compression is around 115-120#... Not bad for a machine as old as this one. As I suspected the gas tank has some rust and looks like it needs replaced but I want to be sure of my problem before I spend that kind of money on an old machine. Where is the best place to get a carb rebuild kit, gas tank, coil??? Whatever...

Any other ideas from the forum would be appreciated... Like how do I rig a temporary tank while I check to see if the carb rebuild is going to solve my problem. I suspect a rebuild is cheaper than a new tank.

Thanks in advance.

Honda doesn't offer a per se rebuild kit for the carb but you will rarely need to actually replace anything but the gaskets, and they do offer a gasket set. You could probably buy cheaper aftermarket gaskets, I use the Honda ones. There's a couple good products for dissolving rust, Kreem is one that comes with an acid and a liner. I like a product Yamaha makes better if the tank doesn't actually leak, it includes an acid and a neutralizer, but no liner for under 20 bucks. Probably worth a try for the money, but it's some NASTY chemicals your working with so be careful and follow the instructions. to try it out, borrow a friend's fuel tank, or you can buy cheap auxiliary tanks from an atv catalogue.

A new float kit in the carb would help, and probably just cleaning it out good and adjusting the valves would help a lot. Our 89 300 runs great, and has had crap for maintenance over the last 14 years (maybe 5 oil changes ever). That 282 may be the best quad engine ever made.
