BOTTOMING OUT 400ex
#1
Was wondering if anybody else is having a problem with their pipe getting dented from hitting the brake caliper on big bottoming out jumps? Both my stock pipe and my new supertrapp have big dents in them from bottoming out big air motocross jumps.

400exinfl,
You're the man! I got a White Bro's slip-on for my 400EX and was alarmed to see a big dent in the side straight out of the box. I called White Bro's right away to see if it belonged there or if it had been damaged during shipment. They said that they are intentionally bending the silencer bodies now so that the body doesn't hit the rear brake caliper on hard landings. I remember thinking at the time that it would be one heck of a jump if you could get that muffler to hit the caliper.

I to have the problem of bottoming out my 99 400ex. I bought one of the first White Brothers slip-on's and after 2 months it had a huge dent on the inside and it broke the mount. I called white brothers and the replaced it imediatly. The new one I got had the inside dented already. Now after a year it has broke the mount 3 more times from hitting so I made a new mount for it from flat steel. So far it is fine but it sure makes ya mad when your at the track and your muffler breaks off. Good luck to ya and keep an eye on the mount. If it keeps hittin use some spacer's on the top mounting bolt between the muffler and the frame.

Unfortunately I bottom mine out on a regular basis. The track where I ride is suited much better for dirt bikes than atv's so it's easy for me to case jumps (big or small), plus I'm new to motocross so don't know sh?t. Got a few more dents in my pipe today. If it cracks I will get an exchange from supertrapp.

Just out of curiousity, is there anybody out there that can fax or email me the rear shock adjustment instructions from the owner's manual. I bought my 400ex used and the guy had lost the manual. The front shocks were set soft so I'm assuming the rear is soft as well. Really don't want to purchase the manual as I have the service manual but it doesn't cover adjustment only removal and installation.

Hmmm, I don't have any trouble with my stock pipe. In fact I looked at it the other day, and it shouldn't come even near hitting the capliper, probably has an inch or more clearance.
Mine gets jumped pretty hard:

When I get home later today, I can look in the owner's manual and see if there are adjustment instructions, what are you looking to adjust? Preload, Compression, or Rebound damping?
Stock preload on the front shocks is the setting just below maximum preload.
E-mail me around 5:00 central today if you want me to look for and scan in the manual stuff. gellett@earthl ink.net

86atc250r,
I think I would like to try increasing preload and compression. Not sure about the dampening. I'd appreciate it if you could scan the manual page(s) regarding all three. If it's too many pages then don't worry about it and I'll order a manual. It just takes so long ordering these things. Thanks a lot for your help.
