I'm going to hook up my tree stand to our electric horse fence to prevent theft. Do you think it'll work?

It'll probably keep the horses from messing with it. Seriously, if it is metal it will conduct the electrical charge. You will have to insulate the ladder from the tree and the ground or it will ground out the fence.

Don't know about where you are but in Washington State doing that would be illegal as it would be considered a hazard to passersby. Legally in this state you even have to put "Electric Fence" signs up. Most folks don't however.

I think I'll run the wire up higher into the trees and then over to the top of the stand. I'll make a disconnect point where it won't be noticeable. I'll insulate the top of the stand. Then place the legs of the ladder in two buckets of water. The plastic buckets should insulate the ladder from the ground.

Considering that if someone touches it, they'll be trespassing. Also considering that a couple guys ruined my deer stand this past season. So they ruined my season. I don't think that a warning sign will be necessary. Maybe I should put out a WELCOME sign.

Please don't open yourself up for a lawsuit if you injure or kill someone. If someone were grounded well enough and the electricity traveled through the right (or wrong) parts of the body then you could find a corpse lying beneath your stand.

Try using a deer cam to spot the neer do well.

There really isn't enough shock value to hurt anyone. I couldn't count the amount of times I've been shocked by our horse fence over the years. It will get someones attention though. Maybe I'll post a warning sign. Written in Japanese.

Not to mention it is highly illegal. If you zap someone intentionally (and aren't certified to do it like cops) then you can go to jail for assault. If they have any kind of heart condition and thier family can prove you zapped them on purpose, your toaste if they thief dies. I wouldn't do it, get a big chain, bigger dog, or sturdy shed, it will save you money in the long run. I set up a rocksalt booby-trap on one of our fences on the ranch back home and a Deputy saw it, it was all I could do to talk him out of arresting me.

I bought one of those plastic coated steel cables that you use for dogs and zig-zaged it through the rungs of the ladder-stand and locked it to the tree. It's been there for two years now on public hunting land.

The problem is that there has been someone messing around the area for a few years. They broke in a neighbors garage and stole a few things. They have been bold enough to bang on the outside of peoples houses at night. Then hide. They banged on the outside of a house while I was there one night. They ruined a tree stand that I made this past season by tearing it apart. (While trespassing) The neighbor on the other side had their cabin broke into and they stole a bunch of stuff. Couple weeks ago there were tracks in the snow where I plan to put the stand. This wasn't even in hunting season.

There is no reason for anyone to be in this area. If they are there, they shouldn't be. I really couldn't care less if I hurt them or not. I could wait until they try to walk off with the stand and then shoot them in their tracks.

Starky- I will have to lock it down with a cable. I would like to have something a little thicker than a dog cable. I'll probably just buy a heavier cable and put loops in the ends.
