Get a Benelli shotgun. I have a Sport for hunting and skeet/trap and a M1 S90 for fun and competition. They work all the time with every load. Gas guns like Brownings and Remingtons are great when they work. But gas systems are finicky with certain loads and a little speck of crud can shut them down. Recoil system like the Benelli works even when dirty.

I also use the 30.06 game master, great gun. I prefer the pump over the bolt action rifles for follow up shots, not that we need it. Right guys?

I have two personal favorites. I use my Rem. 700 in 270 w/ a Leupold 3x9x50 VXll for the woods and small greenfields. I use a Howa 300WSM topped with a Bushnell 4200 4x16x50 for medium fields to wide open cut overs.
Personally, I cant tell a difference in killing power. I have only shot at one deer more than once. Every other has fallen in its tracks. I have used 130/140/150 grn bullets in my 270, but perfer the 140 grn. Hornady load couse it has always done well for me. In my 300, I use 150 grn Ballistic-Silvertips couse I think 180 grn in a 300 WSM for deer is over-kill.
Dad has a Weatherby 270 WSM. It has done good for him, so I would give it the goahead too. He uses a 140grn Accubond, and its pretty mean.
I have seen a lot of calibers used on deer, mostly 270's and 7mm Rem Mags. The only caliber that I have ever seen that was true over-kill was a 338 RemUltraMag at about 40 yrds. I shouldnt have to tell you what happened there. I will say this, it was a guy who had more money than he had sense. He has a Rem 700 SS, Laminated stock topped with a Baush & Lomb 3.5x15 scope. Oh yeah, he was using a 250 grn Swift A-frame. Bear gun in the deer woods.

I have had some good results with the 280 Rem with the 140gr Winchester Supreme Failsafe bullets for whitetail deer.
But, now I have started shooting the Remington 700 Sendero in the 300 SA Ultra Mag...it does the trick

I have always used a 270 win. but I just purchased a 270 WSM in a Browning BAR. I can't wait to hammer on some venison with this. Everyone I have talked too said this was one awesome caliber. I went with 150 grain Nostler partions to start out. It will be used for moose as well.

Ruger M-77 30.06 with a Simmons whitetail classic scope.
Started with a WWII Inland M1 carbine 30 caliber, I killed alot a bucks with this one but haven't even shot it in probaby 10 years. Soon to become the wifes gun since she is thinking about whitetail hunting but she says she would like a 12ft 2-man stand since she is afraid of heights and wants to hunt with me....all I can think about is Bill Engvalls bit on hunting with his wife when she see the big buck and yells.....RUN DEER RUN!
