Heard good things about the NAP Crossfire and Muzzy. Any others worth mentioning? I'm using Crimson Talons right now; not overly impressed. Donate your two cents.

 

I've used the Muzzy 4 blade for years, great bone busting tip, blows a hole through deer ribs quite easily, never had one run out of my sight before dropping.Only once I didn't get a pass through shot, it was a quartering away shot, the tip stuck in the chest bone so hard, had to pull it out with a pliers.

 

Muzzy here too. Look at the satelittes and thunderheads too. Not a big fan of the mechanicals. Just adds another variable that could go wrong- IMO.

 

95wolv, what is your draw length and weight? carbons or aluminums? That sounds pretty impressive.......why not the 3-blade?

I shoot a 2216 xx75 Easton Aluminum arrow with a 125 grain tip, my bow is set up for 30" draw at about 64 lbs. I gave my old bow to my son,he outgrew his old youth bow, and now I shoot a new Hoyt XT2000 cam and a half. The only reason I use 4 blade is I shoot a 4 fletch instead of the standard 3 fletch, but I shoot 3 blade tips as well, seems to fly the same, and kills just as good !!

 

I used to use the Thunderheads and never had a problem with them. I ended up getting some Muzzey's a few years back and haven't looked back, except for mechanicals, they fly more true than the other brands I have used. At least out to 30 yards. Anything over that and I expierence some flight problems. I use the muzzey 100 gr 3 blade, with carbon arrows. My bow is set at 69lbs and I have a draw length of 30". Rocket makes some small fixed blades that I have been thinking of trying out. I have used their mechanicals with great success in the past. The steelhead fixed blade is the one I was going to try this year. One more note. I have made 2 pass threw shots with the same broadhead and arrow on two different deer, and plan to do it again with the same arrow/broadhead this year. Satillite Titans have taken down a few bull elk for me. I swear by a tip that starts cutting immediately on contact.

 

A chisel tip broadhead is better for cutting through bone. I have always used Thunderheds and I know the Muzzy is gret too. A broadhead with a blade diameter of 1'"- 1 1/4" is good. Anything bigger than 1 1/4" is going to catch too much wind and you lose accuracy.

Don't disregard the mechanicals. I've been shooting the ones that NAP makes (I forgot the name of them). They work great and they shoot like your target points. You lose a little bit of momentum when the broadhead hits the target and the blades open, but my arrows are still passing through and leaving a nice big hole.

 

In my opinion penetration is overated, especially with whitetail deer. As long as the broadhead pokes its way out the other side of the deer, that is as much damage the broadhead can do. Most broad heads will do this. Expandables or fixed blades. It doesn't matter if the arrow flys 10 ft or 10yds after it exits a deer. As long as the broadhead exits the other side. If you were hunting moose, elk, bear or other large game, then penetration is alot more important.

I've taken about 53 deer with a bow since my hunting career started. I hunt Pennsylvania and West Virginia. I've used Satelites, Wasp, Punchcutters( the first expandables) Rockets, Thunderheads, and Muzzy. I liked the Rockets but they were only good for one shot on a deer before I usually had to replace broken blades. Here is my experience with the deer taken with each broadhead
