Recurves are fun to shoot, but after about 15 - 20 shots you are too worn out to shoot accurately and you start magnifying bad habbits. The modern compound bow will allow you to hold at full draw longer and let you concentrate on aiming and release techniques.
Go to your local sporting goods shop that has a good archary section and ask about archary clubs. There are a lot of clubs out there but are usually hidden and only known to people that shoot. Anyone in a club would be more than happy to help you, and more than likely you can try a couple different bows out.

Excellent! Thank you for the advice. I'll check it out when I go to the shop.

I only shoot compounds anymore. When hunting elk, I like the penetration and accuracy and distance capability.

I have 3 bows...a new 2005 Mathews Switchback (most awesome bow I have ever owned) , a 2004 Mathews Black Max 2 (fastest bow I have ever owned) and a Diamond Hornet. I have killed alot of animals with the Diamond, its only 3.2 pounds, 30.5" axle-to-axle and 320 fps IBO....I just can't seem to get rid of it, sweet bow, quiet, light, short and fast and doesn't hardly kick.

But of all these bows, the Switchback is going to get the workout this year....I drew for elk, so another bull is going to bite the big one...

pat89, did you ever find a bow? Just curious what you went with.

I haven't picked one up yet. We had some unexpected expenses come up and I told the wife I'd wait until Fall. I'm still looking forward to getting it.

I understand the expense thing. Good luck when you do get one and let us know if you have any questions.

I live in Troy, Michigan. My 8 yr old son is interested in taking archary lessons. Can anyone tell me if there is any place near me or if there is such a thing?
