grouse hunting

Just curious how most of you tend to go after grouse. I like to see them sitting from the ATV but I also like to walk the thicker stuff to get them to fly. No dog though.

Either way is fine for me. Took 3 this weekend, one on the ground and 2 flying. Should have had a few more flyers, tough shots and a crooked barrel made me miss!! I have a pair of GSP's, they do a fine job on holding them tight, I get the most enjoyment out of just watching them work. Wish I did more grouse hunting...tough to fit the fishing, grouse, pheasant and bow hunting in such a short period of time! I'll get a few more grouse out of the deer stand(rifle season), the slingshot tends to take a few each year. I shot at about 10 with the slingshot last year, got 2.

Wow, never heard of shooting them with a sling shot. I suppose you can get a few shots at one bird before they run or fly? grouse counts are way up were we hunt in northern MN. Some of the 1st year grouse are very dumb..LOL Fun to shoot them sitting or flying, great sport.

N. MN...actually got my birds this weekend by the Togo/Bear lake area. I was up doing deer stands/grouse hunting.
The slingshot works well out of the deer stand...nearly silent. Usually a shot or two and they get spooked. Although I did miss one last year with about a 6 shots! Have to hit the neck or head, tough to do.
Where are you from, where do you hunt. I'm originally from Hibbing.

No link...It's OLD!! I've had it for going on 25 years now. I think it's a crossman??, Ya know the old black ones that have the wrist brace, although I took the brace off. The tubing has broke on me a few times over the years, I just replace it with surgical tubing. As far as ammo...I use iron ore pellets. When we were kids we would walk the tracks and pick them up, they'd fall off the trains. My dads garage still has a 5 gal. bucket half full...I keep a can of them in the deer camper.
Not like I shoot it alot, not much of a slingshot guru...just use it for grouse out of the stand. Something to pass the time when it gets slow.

One of my uncles showed me where there were piles of iron ore along the Soo Line in Michigan's U.P. decades ago. I always thought it would be great slingshot ammo. Unfortunately by the time I got a good slingshot the trains weren't running anymore. Now I save the marbles out of spray paint cans. They're just a little smaller than .68 caliber paintballs so they don't work good for paintball guns. They're okay for slingshot ammo but aren't heavy like ball bearings. Ball beaings are deadly.

Wenty, we are by the longville area in N minnesota...From SW MN....NO large cities for me!! Seems to be alot of grouse in the area, im sure there is by you too. Seems like we get alot of city folk in our area up there doing their "hunting" for the year. I know locals dont have spinners on there wheels and drive hummers.LOL
