About this time, the suckers are running, and the Morel mushrooms are popping!

Any of you hunt for Morel mushrooms? I used to every spring with my dad when I lived farther up north. They are delicious. Good when you have them in scrambled eggs or have them with fried sunfish, crappies, or steak! Springtime meant dining on morel mushrooms, and smoked suckers! It happened in our area acouple of weeks ago. I just let them go. Its something how you spot one then you start seeing them all over the place.

I had caught a sucker the other day. (I hope you mean sucker fish.) Wow that's a tough and ugly looking fish! I was fishing for trout and a sucker ate my worm. I was lucky because the hook only went into his big ugly lip. I put my foot on him to get the hook out and then threw him back into the water. I also caught two trout that day. (1 native, 1 stocked)

Yes, the sucker is a fish. Basically classified as a roughfish. The Northern redhorse is similiar, but has reddish colors on it, hence its name. Other roughfish I have caught include: dogfish (bowfin), eelpout, and bullhead. I haven't caught any carp or sheepshead though. Back in 1997 my dad speared a 28 lb. carp in his spearhouse in the winter. He has also speared ones weighing from 10-20 lbs. Must look like a giant pig swimming through the spearhole! Suckers are good smoked, as are carp (though they are quite fatty and oily). Tullibee's are better yet smoked! Besides catching suckers and carp by hook and line, there are guys that bowhunt carp in their boats where there are certain lakes around that are prolific with carp. Carp really tear up the weeds in the lakes, and it is nice to harvest them so they aren't so detrimental to the lakes. I think the state record for a carp in Minnesota is 55 lbs. caught out of Clearwater lake near Annandale?

I been going to get out with my bow and try shooting a few suckers but time has not allowed so far. I use to spear a few years ago in the winter and that was alot of fun but again no time for that either. How far north in MN are you, I am about an hour north of the cities. I don't know of anyone picking shrooms around hear.

I live in S.E. South Dakota and there are lots of mushrooms along the river. Went out two days ago for an hour and a half and found two 5 gallon buckets full. I kept a few for eating and sold the rest for $7.00 a pound. Ended up with $133.00 cash, not bad for little walk. Might head out a couple more times, they will be popping up here for about the next full week.
