Problem with Polaris 800
#1
Hi,
I have a 2007 Polaris 800 ATV that I bought in Oct. 2008,
brand new.
In the beginning, I had absolutely no trouble with the shifting. I had only used it a few times as it is in our
vacation home in NH, and due to circumstances, we
didn't get there much this year.
The last time I used it, there were no problems with
it (in September). When we were out this past weekend,
I had all kinds of problems shifting it. It was like stuck
in one gear and you had to practically force it to change
to a different gear. In fact, my husband would sometimes
have to come over and change gears for me.
It only had around 187 miles on it. We brought it to
the shop and it turned out that it had a broken motor
mount.
They fixed it and we went back out on the trails. Now,
sometimes it is easy to shift, and other times it acts
like when the motor mount was broken, very, very
difficult to shift gears.
We brought it back to the shop again and all the guy
said was "the 800s are known for that". I told him
that I never had the problem shifting until now,
but he didn't seem to care.
Has anyone else experienced this or does anyone
have any ideas?
Thanks, Gayle

The shifting can be on the stiff side with the Polaris quads. Don't worry about breaking the shifter. I use my large, burly, abused arms to give it a good shove and haven't broken it. It seems most stiff when it's not been ridden in awhile. It's like it dries out a bit or something like that. Once you get out on the trails and move it around it should be a little better.

Thank you very much! I'll look for it on the web.
At this point I'm ready to trade mine with my husband's
500. But his is a 2 seater which I don't like, plus I like
the looks of mine better.

Does it shift better with the engine off? I'll bet it does. With the broken engine mount, the motor is able to move and causes misalignment withing the CVT, which causes extra belt drag at idle, which creates torque on the transmission input shaft. When the internal shifting components have load on them, they are difficult to move. Maybe when they put the new motor mount on, things were tweaked a bit and they did not verify CVT belt alignment? Check the idle too...if it is too high, it can cause extra belt drag.
