New here...

Hi. I'm new here. Just want to learn about some 4 wheelers before I buy one. I'm planning on a used one, most likely a 4wd, for hunting. I want one that is reliable but won't break the bank.
Where do I look for good bikes? What do I look for in a good bike? What are some "red flags"?
For example: I'm looking at a 2005 Honda 500 Rubicon 4x4. It has been partially talen apart because the owner was doing some maintenance. The maintenance was replacing the front axle shafts, the brakes, the front grill and bumper assembly. Owner indicates that it runs good and has been only driven by adults. He wants $1,800 for it "as is". Now I can work on stuff and I have some friends that are very mechanically inclined. This is the first bike I've really inquired about after a couple months of lurking on Craigslist and the local classifieds. Obviously I'm looking for something cheap.

A red flag to me is that it isn't too old for a Honda and needs that much work??? How many miles are on it? I suppose if it has over, say, 5000 miles that's understandable, but adult ridden can mean a crazy adult too.

First of all...you can never be too old 4 ATV's!! But as to your question, I personally have had good luck w/ Hondoo's. Had a 03 foreman that went everywhere. I work for Border Patrol and we use the Rubicon's for patrol out in the bush and the agents are rough on them and they hold up pretty well. Moose makes some pretty good points to remember though.

I talked to the guy with the Honda again today. He says the cv joints were worn out so he decided to replace the shafts along with the cv joints. I'm not sure I understand that very well.
Anyway, a guy that is closer says he will sell me a 2005 Kawasaki Prairie 360 4x4 for $2,000. I've heard good things about those bikes. The bike seems to be in better shape than the Honda, and is about 30 minutes closer.
