Default Jetting advice, questions...

I have been playing with my jetting since doing the mods to the snorkle, vents in lid and muffler. I had stock in and went to 142/145, then up to 145/148. The ride this weekend shows I am rich at WOT, so I will go back and change to the 142/145 and this should be about right. I have done a search and read everything I can find about jetting, not concerned with the mains and with 1/2 to WOT.

My concern is that I do a lot of riding with my kids, riding at or below 15 MPH and there is excessive heat on both legs from this low speed riding. The fan runs more and the heat is obnoxious! At the higher speeds (25 MPH and over), everything is fine. The heat is coming from the header pipe on the left and the tranny vent on the right. I have never had it "overheat", but I am concerned I am running too lean at the lower speeds. Any advice here? Doing a plug read after riding at the low speed (1/8 - 1/4+ throttle) shows that I am lean, so I covered the vents in the airbox lid and it helped this weekend. Not as hot, but still lean.

Do I need to shim the needles? I am not too clear on how to do this, no one has posted any clear instructions (at least that I can find) on how to do this. I understand the basics of it, adding 1 or 2 washers (about .040) to richen the lower circuit, but I'm a little nervous. Can someone give me some advice/ instructions? Am I headed in the right direction, or should I be adjusting the air screws, or maybe something else? I have Water Wetter in the coolant, no noticeable difference to me....

I'm sure someone that has done this will offer up some good advice... I replaced mine with Dyno Jet needles when going through the carbs...sorry I can't offer any advice...Just wanted to let you know you're not alone...LOL... you can sure tell that school is out most everywhere, the day time activity on these forums has dropped off big time, now that the kids don't have the school computers to play on all day...LOL...Have A Good One...WAM

I suggest running the airscrews at 2.5f & 2.75r. Shim the needles by 0.040 also. Pull the slides out of the carbs and place 2 small washers under the collars of the needles. This raises the needle in the slide to richen the circuit. We used this recipe in two of my friends' 650s and they work great.
