Default P650 Belt tension

I've got near 400 miles on the 650 and the belt is barking some on take off. I broke into it last weekend but didn't have a impact near to pull the retaining nut off the driven clutch.

Any tips before I go back into it again? The belt has alot of play so I'll probably end up pulling most of the shims.

Thanks,
Mike

see NYROC's 650 site. He has complete instructions on the belt adjust, and how to make a couple special tools to make the job very easy.

You can bust the nut with a ratchet extension braced against the frame or floorboard. Just be careful. Pulling the shim does wonders to tighten up the belt. I did the driven spring at the same time, it does kill some of the take-off lag, but also squeels a little bit in gear when stopped.

Thanks guys......

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, still haven't popped it open yet, probably this weekend.

NewBeatle.... I am running a big wheel kit, I bought it with the ITP cast aluminium Wheels and 589 Tires, I can't remember the numbers. I do use low range from time to time but I don't do hardly any mudding or pulling, it has seen some very easy mileage so far. I have had it out in the mountains of Colorado but even there it had it pretty easy.

Thanks again,

Mike

We've used a breaker bar with success...just be sure to hand "spin" the driven pulley enough to make sure you have it at the largest diameter when you measure the belt deflection. We pulled a shim and thought we'd never get the pulley back off!

Just wanted to say thanks for the info, pulled out the thicker shim and everything is fine. Made my own little spring compressor and it works great.

mystery solved........................................
The belt doesn't squeal when the trans is in neutral, at idle, right?????? If it does, you've got the belt a little tight.
