I am wanting to get a new 4-wheeler this coming spring and would like to get the prairie 400. The only thing that I was woundering is does it have any engine braking at all? Other then that it sounds like a strong 4-wheeler. Could someone give me some input on this.
THANKS!!!

My '98 Prairie 400 4X4 has some engine braking, but only when moving at medium to fast speeds. As far as crawling through the rocks goes, then engine braking is not there.

I read somewhere...it might have been the ATV review part of this site that the Prairie didn't have engine braking. I also asked a dealer when I bought the ATV I have now and he said the Prairie does not have engine braking.

This is only what I have heard.

The Prairie has full engine braking until the engine rpm drops below the clutch engagement ~1400 rpm.

Its creepy when you first ride it because the engine holds you right down to a crawl, then you hear the clutch release and the quad freewheels.

Once you get used to it, you anticipate the release and blip the throttle just before release. It would be nice if Kawasaki updates the system to operate like the Polaris EBS or the Kodiak Ultramatic.

Thanks for all of the input guys. I really like that four wheeler but I will be doing alot of crawling around steep hills and I think that I would really wear out some brake pads pretty fast.
