Initial tune-up question on my 700?
#1
I put about 12-15 hours on so i'm more than ready for my first tune up... have a few questions tho
1.) 235 + parts? Does that sound right?
2.) Does it really take 3 hours??
3.) can I just get a service manual and do this myself (not knowing anything about them)
4.) I want to put on the DMC alien exhaust (can I do that myself?) or ?? how much does that usually cost to install?
5.) isn't it just check the valves replace the air cleaner. replace the plug/s check the belt? and the other oils?? it doesn't sound like a big deal... Shrug>
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Let me take a stab at answering some of your questions.
1) that sounds about the same as I paid last summer for initial service on my P650;
2) I don't know exactly how much labor time it took, but 3 hours sounds about right to me;
3) Yes, its possible to do it yourself if you have the know how, tools and the time;
4) You should be able to install the duals yourself...but be aware that you will also need to re-jet the carb at the same time...so its a little more involved than just bolting the new pipes onto your quad;
5) No valve adjusted on initial service...but pretty much everything else that is normally done, including putting dialectric grease on battery connections, lubricating and adjusting the brake cables, changing engine and front diff. oil, changing wet brake oil, etc. (maybe checking the belt tension too...but I'm not 100% sure if its done at initial service). I'm sure that I'm leaving some stuff out, but overall its nothing that you can't do yourself if you wanted to.
I chose to let the dealer handle the initial service if for no other reason that I had proof that it was done...just in case there was a warranty issue down the road and I needed to show it was properly maintained. For me, the valve adjustement is the main thing I don't want to mess with and so I plan to let my dealer handle the regular services (which includes valve adjustments) every 100 hours.
Happy trails...

Thanks for the info.. I just didn't know it was 3 hours worth of involvement.. I figured it was like an hour and 100 bucks LoL... thanks again...

Yep, I too was shocked when I first discoved the price for initial service. I recently priced the regular service (for every 100 hours) and discovered its more costly than the initial service!! To save money on the regular service, I will inspect the belt tension myself and let the dealer handle everything else.

I was quoted and charged 120 plus parts and tax, and when I picked up my p700 the service guy (not a Kawi dealer) told me that it took 3 hours and will cost 180 plus parts and tax next time. Of course, a dealership will always be a little more. So....sounds pretty reasonable.

things like valve adjustment you prob want a mechanic to do. If you have buddies who sled or quad they can get you started on wrenching 101. He11 I know a guy who used to load his snowmobile and take it to the city to have the drive belt changed!!!
You should be able to do all the work yourself soon except for internal motor stuff. Workin on the KFX 700 is easy meaning it is all there hanging out. Very little plastic to remove unlike the utility 4x4's.
Changing jets, adjusting belt tension doing the fuilds, all that stuff is just part of ridin man!!

XC800,
You pickin' on Alltoys again? You know he's embarrassed about his lack of mechanical skills!
