Prairie 300 4x4 questions
#1
New to the board, so hello all.
I picked up a '99 P300 4x4 and have a few questions. First, I was wondering what model years are similar in design. I need a few parts. Second, does front of '99 have a LSD. It seems to be an open diff. WHen i turn front wheel, opposite side turns in reverse direction. Finally, this one has been rolled a few times. I need fenders, racks, and speedo. Any suggestion for finding aftermarket parts? Finally, I checked belt to see if its the thick model. It looked to be about 3/4 inch thick. Can someone describe difference in thick and pre-recall belts?
Thanks in advance,
Mark

welcome to the fourm
The KVF400 from 1999-2001 have a similar design. What is LSD? What do you mean by open diff? Do you mean does yours have a locking differential... the answer is no. Your steering is not right, your other wheel (outer wheel) should turn in the same direction but not as much. Your best bet is an other ATV if you are new to atving or get someone that knows atvs to look at it because they know what to look for and they can help you to fix it. I would look for one that's scrapped for parts. You will have a hard time getting aftermarket parts for the bike you have and the parts you need. Mike Penland started on the 400 I think so I would call him. His number is posted here some wheres. You need to use a kawi measuring stick (LotsOfLaughter) to properly measure your belt. It looks like a glorified tooth pick or envelope opener. Don't know what a pre-recall belt is... sounds like nothing I would want to put in my bike. Roll over? I don't think they are any different than any other bike... it's more driver than ATV.... I put 24000km on my 400 and went up some very steep hills and it never rolled on me. Big design difference between a Bayou and a prairie... Bayou also are not as well known as the Prairie.

Thanks for info. The prarier runs and drives fine, it just neesds a seat and some plastic. As far as the frontend goes. LSD is short for limited slip differential. OPen differentials do not have limited slip or lockers. On an open diff, if one wheel spins the other does nothing. In other words your stuck. To test for a locker or LSD, if you lift both front wheels off the ground and turn a wheel, the other wheel should turn in same direction. I was told that my '99 has a LSD, but when I do the test, tires turn in opposite direction. Lockers were not offered on '99 or '00 models. Limited slip may have been. I was hoping someone knew if LSD were on hte '99 models.

I'm not aware of the two types of limited slip. I never had both front tires jacked up at once... I thought you would need the back tires up to being it's all time four. I know with my 98 400 if one tire is doing nothing I can pump the front brake and it would switch some of the power to the dead wheel. I know you can get a kit so all four will spin but that makes it hard for steering and it's not switch on the fly. If your know what you are doing.... some here I was talking to took a 360 front end and put it on a 400.
