FRONT SPROCKET
#1
Will changing the front sprocket on my 88 Mojave' make that much of a difference ? Finally got the old beast running again although I am a little bigger than I was when I rode it 8 or 9 years ago I was still mildly dissapointed with its performance especially in hill climbs.( Of course it was like comparing apples to oranges my other bike is a 00 400ex) Any suggestions on beefing it up a little top end is really not too important would prefer to be quicker off the line so to speak. Dont want to put a lot of cash into it but I must admit for a 12 year old bike it is in great running order and looks great.
Thanks,
Triston

changing the front sprocket size you will notice a difference.I put a 11 tooth on my mojave which is 1 tooth smaller than stock I did not like the change it really took alot from my top end speed it helped on hill climbs, but not enough for me to keep it on I like a 12 tooth alot better.

I put the largest sprocket I could on mine, 12 or 13, I forget now. I also put 22" tires on it, it's completely stock and will pull wheelies like crazy!
Raising the front sprocket and increasing tire size will increase your top speed. For my bike it really smoothed out the acceleration, before you'd rip through the gears too fast and not get anywhere. Now, the power band is broad, and wide spread throughout the gears.
Higher (numerically) front sprocket = more speed less acceleration
Higher (numerically) rear sprocket = more acceleration and less top speed.
Rule of thumb is 2-3 rear teeth equal 1 tooth on the front.
