another backfiring question
#1
i have had my vforce for about 2 weeks now. it is pretty hard to start when cold. it will start on choke after a couple of tries then it wont stay running when i take the choke of unless i give it a little gas for a minute or so. but when it gets warmed up it still seemed it was idling to low. i turned the idle air screw about 1/4 turn clockwise and it idles better. but now it backfires sometimes when i let off the gas. is there another screw i need to adjust. i have read alot of the posts on this subject, but i dont see any other screws to adjust in the service manual. i figured i would ask before i start turning screws on the carb. thanks again

You adjusted the air screws wrong, too far, or only one of them.
There are two. Your post says you did one.
Turn them in until engine slows, turn them out until you get the fastest idle. Turn them 1/4 turn out past the leanest point of fastest idle. Do this with a hot engine, and only do one at a time.

they are the ones with the straight screwdriver head, right?? not the ones with the hex type head?? sorry, my service manual doesnt help me much. thanks again. i have read to turn them in all the way clockwise then back out 2 1/2 turns and go from there. is this correct?? thanks

Screw heads, start at 2.5 turns and adjust as NYROC said. Adjust your idle speed as needed to idle smooth in what ever tempertaure you are riding in.
