Anybody else having problems with the 2.5 Warn winch that Kawasaki offered with purchase of a quad. I rarely use mine and have had more problems with the cable going off spool and binding the winch. I had another warn winch on a big bear I used to own and never had any problem with that one. Oh and it I am not pulling at an angle. I just wonder if there is too much cheap cable on the 2.5 winch.

The cable found on these winches are the same on all winches, nothing different on any of them. There is nothing wrong with the winch, you may just have bad luck with the cable, once you kink it, its easy to kink again and it will easily move off the drum. You can either buy a new cable and watch it more carefully or get a plasma rope. I just upgraded to a plasma rope and its way way better.
The benefits of a plasma rope over a steel cable are:
1) lighter, it will float
2) synthetic rope, 9000 lbs rating, can be coiled around your arm and then throw it out
3) Wont cut your head off when it snaps, lol. It will snap very very little or just fall to the ground.
4) No more gloves to wear when you pull it out
It far better in every way, its even more resistent to rocks and metal. The only draw back is that it costs about 2-3 times more.

When you get a new winch you are supposed to unspool all cable and spool back in under a load. Roller fairlead helps. when winching you should ALWAYS throw a coat or blanket over the cable to deaden the head lopper effect should the cable break or hook come off etc.

hehe, I have yet to install it. Working on my winch, the wiring is all screwed up. From what I hear the rope is a tad thicker and the last 10 feet or less will not fit on the drum. Thats OK with me, if I find its a hassle having that extra length I will cut it and use that part as a tree saver. Its easy to install than a cable though, its just like rope. Installing a steel cable, as you can imagine, can be troublsome.
With the rope, they actually recommend no fairlead, lol. I still will use mine though. I think either will work well, just don't have it open ended with no fairlead or that other thing with no roller, can't remember the name right now.
You know whats funny, the hook it rated for 1.5 tons, the rope is rated for 4 tons, lol.
