#1
ok heres some things going on with my dads prarie 300.. he doesnt know much bout 4-wheelers or any type of engine... but im pretty knowledgeable about them.. but theres just SOMETHIN going ON!!! i tell ya its wierd.. and its been going on for a while and im finally asking you guys, the pros.. so can u please gimme any ideas? ok i will list its symptoms.
#1: when u run it, it wont let u go past about 1/4 to 1/2 throttle... if u go passed that the bike just slows down..
#2: it seems that if u open the choke half way it will work ok..
#3: after the bike is warmed up... the problem goes away and we dont have to use the choke any more....
so what do u guys think? im not sure whats going on but its still doing it and im kinda concerned its carb problems.. im gonna check the spark plug when it cools down... thanks for any replys!

Has it been sitting a long time with old gas in the tank? Maybe the carb is clogged. Check for small mammals, birds, reptiles (I guess I am not aware of any reptiles in this state), and insect nests stuck in the intake or exhaust.
Could be the slide is stuck.
Could be it is jetted for Colorado.
You know bettrer than I do since you know the history.

I could tell easily if I could hear it, see it and smell it. You should have investigated the carb before you even asked what is wrong on the forum. That way you would have a 90% chance of finding it first without us having to guess from long distance.
If it pops in the intake/airbox, then it is lean. Also, lean causes a complete misfire. So you can tell when it is too lean because it sounds like the ignition is shutting off. Obviously it sounds like it is leaning out since you cause it to run with the choke on.
If it is rich then it will usually still fire (unless super rich), but the power will decrease. It will sort of sound like it is clogged with peanut butter. Sometimes rich will cause a backfire and even foul plugs.
If you are running without an air filter, it would screw things up like you have described. Sometimes over spraying filter oil into an air filter can do things like that. Clean the filter, respray it, massage it, and then step on it between sheets of paper towels to make sure it is not overly oiled.
If one of your slide springs is weak or broken it would do that.
Sometimes a partially clogged main jet will do that.
Have you removed the float bowl and looked for gum, rust, or other stuff? Check the jet. Check for crap stuck to the float. Check the float level.
There are small air orifices in the slide diaphram. There is also a host that equalizes the pressure on the backside of the diaphram. Check those. Check for a leaky diamphram.
Ignore what I have said about the spring and diaphram if the carb is not a CV carb (then it wont have a diaphram).
