P650 makes a popping noise from the air intake area?????

Has anyone else had this problem. My 02 Praire 650 makes a popping noise that sounds like carb(s) backfiring or something. It really sounds like its coming from the air filter area.
It's always done this and doesn't seem to affect performance too much but it is annoying.
My dealer says it's sh!tty gas causing the problem.

Join the club, my V-Force does the same thing. Some say its a lean condition when warming up. Its more of a mystery than anything I think. Does your popping sound go away after its warmed up?

Ya, it does diminish after a while, but I'm not completely certain it every completely goes away. It's more apt to happen while crusing at slower speeds and steady throttle. It doesn't seem to occure during acceleration.

carb backfireing... result of poor jetting and or warmming up. As far as I know it's not hard on your bike but it can be annoying. I do find if you change speeds alot it's better. but if your getting that much try jetting or put the stock air filter back on. IT IS NOT THE GAS... take it to a dealer that will not say that, sounds like they don't know how to jet it propperly to me. When your bike is warmed up it should be very seldom for it to backfire.

I also have this problem with my 2002 Prairie. I asked my dealer and he said it is common for the 650's . Like you said" It doesn't affect the performance, but it is very annoying". Mine seems to pop mostly while idleing. It has a K&N air filter on it from when I bought it,so I cant say if it popped before with the stock air filter on it. Does your Prairie have a stock air filter on it?

My 03' 650 does the same thing. If you take the airbox lid off and rev the engine you will actually see some fire flashes. Pretty cool! Can't help you solve it though. Mine only does it when it is cold!

you guys, this is VERY simple. That popping when warming up or taking off is a lean low speed jet. This is easily fixed by backing the screws out to richen the low speed mixture. My prarie came too lean from the factory, both screws were 1 and 3/4 turns out. Now at 2.5 turns out the quad starts 10x easier and doesn't pop at all. Since you are richening the low speed screws, you'll likely have to turn your idle adjuster in a bit to compensate for the extra gas. One prairie I looked at had one screw out 3/4 of a turn and one screw totally closed! Moral of the story, turn your screws all the way in, and back them out 2.5 turns. You'll be much happier.
