has anyone had this problem with fluid leaking around the axle? How serious is this and how big of a job is it to fix?

A little seepage is no big deal. Just check the level periodically. Once it starts to form a visible track down the rear end, drips on the floor, or the level is low, it is time to change the seals.

Do a search here for more info.

Blair Kawi wants you to buy the housing with the seal turns out you can replace just the seal, I think you order the seal from the other side. No biggie however with the change in climates here I would replace it before next winter and flush it regularly.

Jason, your correct, part #16146-1211, mine is still covered under extended warranty so i getting the whole housing, plus the left side as well. This will be of interest to anyone else with the 2002, there is another piece that is on the P700, it's part #11065-1212 and its a boot that protects the seals from being damaged, although the part shows on the parts diagram, the dealers say that it shows as being no longer available. This sucks because it's suppose to prevent debris from damaging the seals. Only thing i can think is that if it does the job, kawi would loose out on repeated part sales for these seals. Thanks

I had heard that the boot on the P700 really doesn't help, as it actually tends to trap debris next to the seal. That may be why it is now unavailable.
