Mojave Oil Leak Help
#1
Hey,
I own a 2001 Kawasaki Mojave 250. I have maintained this bike well as long as I have owned it. I was not the original owner though, but I bought it almost new. I have put many hours on it but have done frequent oil changes. I recently changed the oil in my Mojave. I did not replace the oil filter because I did not have one handy. I figured I would replace the filter next time. I had the correct amount of oil in my Mojave. After I changed the oil my Mojave ran great. It ran great for 3 good rides, about 7 hours all together. Then today I took it out for another ride… I glanced at my site glass and the oil level appeared fine. I pulled it out and started it and I took off quickly as I was in a rush to meet my friend. I got to my friends house (my friends house is about 1,000 ft away so it was not a long ride at all, only a few seconds) and saw that there was a small puddle of oil under my Mojave. I walked back to my Mojave and looked at where it was coming from and found it was leaking form around where my front sprocket enters the engine block. The oil was no longer leaking though as it was shut off and sitting in the driveway. There was a substantial amount on my skid plate, and a little on my rear tire, and shoe. I went back and checked where my Mojave was parked before I started it and it was bone dry. There were a few drops though down my driveway. I am hoping this will not be an expensive fix. I have searched for people with the same problems and have come up with nothing; I don’t want to take it to a shop and have to pay with my arm or leg. Please tell me what you think it could be, and if it is a job that can be done at home or something I have to send it in for. My Mojave only leaks when it is driving, I know this because when I brought it home it was missing some oil so I filled it up and placed a bucket under it, I then left it for a few hours and came out and there were only a few drops from the skid plate.

Iam almost betting that its not that
Check this
If you put to much oil in witch you might have due to the filter already being filled
then if may be leaking out of your air box, and going down that side
just take a lok at your box and see if it is wet any where

I just pulled off the air filter cover, and it is normal. I also checked all the little hoses coming out of the bottom of the airbox for overflow, that are all dry. I have not pulled off my sprocket yet but it is leaking from around my sprocket. I do not think it was to much oil because i rode it 3 times before and it was great, also the oil drains almost completley out when you run it. Im afraid to take off my sprocket by my self so i will wait until my dad can help me with it. Hopefully tonight i will take it off and look. Thanks so much for your help.

There should be a replaceable oil seal around the shaft that the front sprocket goes on, I have never taken a Mojave apart, but a friend of mine had a similar leak on his Blaster, and it turned out to be a seal. Depending on how it is put together, you may have to take the side cover off to replace the seal. All it takes is a little tear, or old age and a few cracks to leak a lot of oil, especially when it is running.

On the Blaster,he was able to push the new one on from the outside, some quads have the seal recessed in the inside of the case, requiring you to take the side cover off, don't know if the Mojave will need this, just take the sprocket off and look at how the shaft is sealed on the side.
