Default Offset wheels

I see wheels come with many different offsets. What do all of the different numbers mean? (4+3F, 3+4R ect). I just want to put a wheel on my 700 prairie. Why is everything got to be complicated?

A 3+2 offset would be : from the mounting surface ,3" of rim to the inside, and 2" on the outside. A 2+3 is 2" in and 3" out. The 2+3 would set each tire 1" farther out than the 3+2 It would have been easier I guess, to say the first # is the inside rim width and the second # is the outside rim width.(from the center)

Default Offset wheels

Why wouldn't they build the wheels to have the same offset on the front and rear? Would this be a reason why some guys who put the larger tires (27 inch) on have problems with rubbing in different spots on their quads specifically on the gas tank shroud or front bumper plastic or would any wheel with an offset alleiviate that problem? Maybe some guys don't pay enough attention to what they are really getting for an offset when they purchase new wheels.
