Sorry for both your losses......
As I mentioned before my Girlfriend is a service manager at a Chevy store and she said it is a full blown recall now and the latest parts are available. So I am thinking if they are labeled made in china thats where there are going to be getting them from whether they are stainless or not.....she said they were.

My god this is awful there is people dieing because of these cables !!!do not load any thing with ramps or sit on this piece of bad engineering even with new ones , take the damn gate off and load your mower or quad or what ever, this is truely terrible and every thing I own with a plate is G.M this is very disheartening to learn of 2 deaths because of this moisture, flexing, and alloy problem. My heart goes out to those whos lives have been affected by this abnormality and neglegence of G.M.C they will pay for this some day wait and see.

There is a solution.
Theres a guy on www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com that is fabricating old school stainless steel hinged support bars. I just ordered a set for my Avalanche. Theres also a group buy going on, they are usually $65, hes selling them to member of that website for $50 delivered!
Check them out at vrstainlesstraps.com.
I shoehorned my Brute Force into the back of the Av last night....aye aye aye, what a tight fit!

jhmach,
Actually I know of 3 confirmed deaths and according to investigators there is a 4th but I do not have any details on it. That does not include the countless injuries. I agree wholeheartedly about taking the tailgate off while loading heavy equipment or even better yet as jgramjet mentioned getting something like VR Straps. What concerns me deeply is the hundreds of thousands small business owners (carpenters, lawn care, painters, etc) that constantly use these for work and would find taking the tailgate off to be too much of a pain in the ****.
regards,
Michael
