Default P650 rear axle seal leaking...anyone seen this yet?

I just noticed the left rear seal is leaking on the swingarm now.I swear this seemed to have happened overnight.Has anyone else replaced this yet? It looks like there is a cover that unbolts and then hopefully slides off the axle and the seal is serviceable then.

Default P650 rear axle seal leaking...anyone seen this yet?

Kodiac1,

I just noticed the exact same thing after a very hard 2 day ride. I have 2,000 miles and need to replace the rear right axle seal. I did notice that the seal on the new 700P's was of (in my mind) a better design, it stuck out a full inch from thr rear diff. Does anyone know if the P700 seal will fit the 650's???

I haven't done mine yet but they did start leaking about a month ago. Nothing too bad just a bit of sweating around the seal and on the drive shaft. I just check it out after doing mud or water crossings and no problems yet. Follow Nyroc's rear axle remove and replace procedure its what you have to do to get at the seals.

Here are the parts you will need.

92049-1592 - oil seal
92049-1571 - oil seal
671D2585 - o ring

Let us know how difficult or easy the procedure was. I'll be doing mine in the fall/winter.

Spliff......are both sides leaking on yours????? My left side is the only one leaking for now.
Fast Ed....are you talkign about those rubber boots the 700's have?? I think they are basically a dust seal.
I am going to Hatfield/McCoy next week so I won't be doing it till I get back but will let you know.
I have a Kaw Service manual and it does not look too bad....at least the left side anyway.

Just the left side. I have the service manual too and the procedure does not look too bad. Actually when I do the seals I'm going to replace the swingarm bearings at the same time. It seems to make sense since you have to take the axle out to do the seals, might as well remove the hole swingarm and do it all on the bench.

I am not so sure you have to take the axle out to just do the left side.I think you can remove the cap on the left side I believe and the seal is in that.I am planning on doing my swingarm bearings too but I think mine (hopefully) is just going to be a regrease thing.I am not having any symptoms of swingarm bearing troubles yet......fingers firmly crossed lol

My left side started showing leakage signs several months ago but has since quit leaking. I may replace mine so I can put the steps on my website. But, I will wait until it starts leaking again.

KOD, the same thing happened to mine. That's why I haven't change them yet but will be doing it soon.

kodiac, hopefully you don't have to remove the axle but you may want to take a look at the bearing that sits beside your leaking seal. In the manual they say that if the bearing is shot on the axle you need a new axle but I remember reading somewhere that its a bunch of bull and you can replace the bearing alone but I'm not 100% on that.

You won't have to remove the axle to replace the seals on either side. Just remove the hub and 4 bolts on the outter most plate on the left side and slide it all the way off the axle. Be careful to replace the seals in the proper orientation and also replace the o-ring. According to Kaw you have to buy the entire bell assembly for the right side but you dont. Just buy seals for the left side and remove the bell on the right side, in the same way as the plate on the left, gently tap out the large roller bearing and replace the seals. Right side bell costs about 75.00, just the seals and o-ring about 15.00.
