Default Need Advice on Buying P700

Hello, I'm wanting to upgrade to a P700 ('04 or '05) from my trusty P650 just for more power and also not having to do maintenance later. My 02 P650 hasn't required any maintenance other than routine, but the day is going to come as I have 2000+ miles on her.

Do you have any rules of thumb on how much to offer off the sticker price, how much to ask more for the trade-in? Anything would help, as I don't want to be the object of a feeding frenzy in the dealership.

This is going to be my last bike, so I hope not to get taken and have a sour taste over it.

Thanks.

It's not enough of an upgrade, IMO. A few cc's is all your getting. If the 650 has been good to you, then I'd just stay with that. The 700 doesn't really have any features the 650 doesn't have. No IRS, NO fuel injection, no other notable upgrades.

Seems to me that the "upgrade" isn't much of an upgrade.....

BUT, if you want to do it, I'd go at least $400 - $500 off sticker. Let them know that you are serious and will take it RIGHT NOW. I have found that dealers are very responsive to "live ones" as opposed to "tirekickers".

Ya know what I mean?

Default Need Advice on Buying P700

Just be careful with the availability. When I bought my 04 3 months ago a couple of dealers would not go bellow msrp because they new I wanted a P700 and the availability was limited because of the new BF750 coming out. One dealer went 200 over msrp and would not budge. I ended up saving a ton of money by buying a brand new 04. It took allot of calling around to find one but the dealer ended up selling it to me at cost and got a warn winch.

Do your research, go to a few different dealers and feel them out to see how much they will move and whether they are trying to move stock in the winter months.

Good luck hope this helps

He probably meant the BF650. kawiyowee, I dont know but If it were me I would probably go with the new BF650 it has all the features of the prairie including solid rear axle. and a few extra refinements. But its priced low enough that you could get it, a dyna CDI and a clutch kit installed, and a little pocket money to boot. Add the CDI and clutch kit on the bf650 and it will beat the stock 700. (Of course the 700 would win if you add the CDI to it also, but thats not my point.)

Sorry I meant BF650. Kawisaki plants were building the 650's vs making the p700's. Kawi is not making a BF750 with solid rear axle.

I think what he was saying that at the time when he purchased his, Kawi was just introducing the BF750i (IRS) and had shifted alot of there production capacity over to the then new BF750i to get more of them out to the dealers, thus cuting back on the P700 production. I think there might have been some salesman BS going on too. As far as I have seen there has not been any shortages of P700's. At least not in my area. The dealer I bought my last Twin Peaks from (prairie clone) was advertising 6099.00 for the 2005's and 5999.00 for the last 2OO4.

kawiyowee: here is what I would do, I would try and sell the P650 myself (put an add in the local paper) you will likey only get 3000.00 to 3300.00 for it on trade and you can probably sell it pretty quick for around 3900.00 - 4200.00. I would then go to the local kawi shop and see what kind of deal they would do on a P700. Low 6000 range is a good deal. If you feal they are feeding you some kinda line of bull like MSRP plus Freight and setup, thats when you go to the local Suki dealer and see what the Twin peaks Would cost since its a clone of the prarie 700 offered in Yellow or Blue. If price is more important than power you could also look at the BF650 SRA which is a Praire with the same chassis and motor you have now with new name and new plastic. All for 500.00 less than the prairie 700's. A Dyna CDI cost about 250.00 and will add the performance needed to make the BF650 = that of the P700. Selling it yourself is kinda a pain in the butt, however your looking at trading for around the 3000.00 range or doing it yourself and keeping a grand or so in your pocket when its all said and done.

Hope that helps.

I know for sure that our guys got better deals on Twin Peaks than Prairies for some reason.AND if you like blue thats the way to go.I would not be afraid fo your 650.There are numerous guys on here that have alot more miles than you have.I know of a rental (believe it or not) in West Va that had in excess of 3k in 18 months and it was running strong until it was crashed.I will say that the 700 does have a diff (slightly) drive and driven pulley system. They seem to go longer between service and of course the air cleaner is diff.I personally can't tell a whole lot of diff stock for stock between the 650 and 700.....we have two in our group. Our newest rider got a Twin Peaks for $6100.00 plsu tax and the dealer thru in a helmet.I think the 3-3300 trade in and 4K retail is pretty close.
