Thanks, 2TV. Sounds like you know what I'm looking for! I definitely want to be able to powerslide without grabbing and rolling over too easily. I'll look at the Gators and some of the other brands/models before limiting my search to only radials.

 

Dang i have been gone on vacation for the last week and a half, i will be going to 2 kawie dealers next weekend and buying a BF with who ever gives the best price.

Outa the 589 and the Gator which is the more mudcapable tire? I know i dont want a outlaw, its just to much to start with, i might try them later tho......

So im thinking 26 or 27" tires, prob the 27"s but what is the deal with having to have front rims for the back??? I was planning to run 27x10 front and 27x12 rear??? is this going to work or will i have to have 27x10 all around??


So if i was going to order a set of rims what kinda backspaceing would i need to get to run the 27x12 in the rear if its possible?

 

I run 589’s on my Grizzly in winter (27x11x12 rear, 27x9x12 front), then 26” Dirt Devils the rest of the time. I run 26” Gators on my Brute all of the time.

I can tell you from experience that the 589’s will do better in the mud than the Gators (I went through a mud hole yesterday in 2WD on my Grizzly that I couldn’t get through today on my Brute in 4WD with the front diff lock engaged). The Gators are a better overall trail riding tire though, but between these two tires if going through mud is your main objective then the 589’s are your better choice.

You should be able to run 27x10x12 & 27x12x12 (or 27x9x12 & 27x11x12 in the case of 589's) on stock wheels...

 

Try Maxxis Bighorns thier designed for sandy rocky areas. Try to go upto a 27 inch tire this will help bring the power under better control.

 

ATV television is right by saying that the big IRS machines work much better with radial tires on. I put ITP ATR 26' with type 5 wheels, you would not believe the difference that just putting these tires on have made. The ride is smoother, handles better, and you feel like you can handle the speed of these machines much better. I thing for the IRS, the radial is the way to go. Just my 2 cents good luck.

 

My only fear is that the radial tires on the market don't look all that great for mud. I'm sure they might be better in mud than the stock meats they put on these things, but aren't the tread designs of most(?) of the radials currently on the market more for general trail use?

 

I'm not too sure but I think I remember reading somewhere that radial tires don't work that good in the mud thus the reason why they have a not so aggressive tread pattern.

 

From what I understand you only do a little mudin and mostly trail ride. I have had Bear Claws, ATR's and I just ordered a set of Big Horn Radials. I know some people that got 589s and mud lites and they do not handle as good as the radials, in fact they are trying to sell them and get a more all around radial. Radials get very good traction in all but the most deepest mud. Radials have a flatter foot print on the ground so as the IRS travels up and down the tire stays in contact with the ground and you get much less pulling to the left and right at higher speeds. So if you just go at a slower pace the 589s or one of the others would work fine, this is not to say you can't go fast with those type of tires but you will go faster with a good all around radial, why do you think that the top riders run tires like maxxis All Tracks and Big Horns instead of Mud bugs and the such. I take notice you don't see alot of ATR's in the winners circle due to the same problem I had with them (durability). I hope this helps, good luck in picking the right tire for your riding conditions.
