02 prairie 650 4wd problem
Initially when i switched the 2wd switch to 4wd the display said it was in 4wd.The front wheels were not turning.I went over all the connections and when i removed the connector by the foot brake attached to the motor and reconnected it it went into 4wd.Now it won't go out of 4wd and the lights are flashing at half second intervals(2wd /4wd).I think i have a bad connection but i can't seem to locate it.Any help would be appreciated.

When counting the flashing interval, be clear what you are counting. Total cycle time is from 2WD to 4WD and back to 2WD. Just from 2WD to 4WD is half of the cycle.
People usually count half cycle and based on this counting method:
1). 0.5 second means fault in diff actuator.
2). 1.0 second means fault in engine brake actuator
3). 2.0 second means fault in both acutators. Not likely unless you somehow managed to do so. Usually, control unit is acting up in this case.
If it is 1 second interval, try resetting the actuator by applying direct battery voltage. Possibly the potentiometer is out of range and control unit can't bring it to the home position.
If it is 2 second interval, disconnect/reconnect battery cable or control unit connector. This resets the control unit's EPROM. If this doesn't work, your control unit is shot. Sometimes, shorted actuator smokes the control unit. So, be careful.
Good Luck.

hey there birdbath, from 2 other forums its sounds like the front differential actuator is either shot or not engaging all of the way. thats the best i can come up with! Hayashi sounds like he's the one with the best answer.

What's up guys? I couldn't wait till saturday to mess with this thing.Hayashi, I tried what you said and applied voltage to the front actuator.I briefly flashed the connections.I lost the blinking lights and now the quad was in 2wd.I put the machine on my lift and again proceeded to put her in 4wd.The display said she was in 4wd but no 4wd.I'm having a tough time believing my problem is the actuator.I think it's whatever is feeding this actuator is my problem.I'm just confused why it reads everything is normal and 4wd is engaged and it is really not. What do you think?Guys, feel free to jump in on this one.I do not want to take it to the dealer. Thanks for the help.

Birdbath,
Sorry, I couldn't get back to you any sooner. OK, you've made some progress for me to help you better. You may have electrical problem and here is what you need to do.
1. Make sure your battery is fully charged, min. 12 VDC.
2. Push to 2/4WD button to 4WD positon (while riding).
2. Kill the engine by sliding the stop switch on the handlebar, not using the ign key.
3. Remove the seat and disconnect the control unit from the harness (don't confuse with igniter).
4. Measure the voltage between the Green (+) wire and Black/Yellow wire pins at the harness connector side. It should be ~4.8 VDC.
What you are measuring is the supply voltage from igniter to control unit to activate 4WD. If there is no 4.8 volts, that means the 4.8V transistor in your igniter is some how damaged. The reason why you are not seeing any flashing/error on the meter is because the igniter/brain doesn't know it has a problem (can't see own problem, just like us). Have you had any electrical/ignition modification on your bike? Think what you might have done to damage the igniter.
If you know anyone who has a V-twin P or BF, use your igniter to confirm the problem before spending big bucks (it would not damage the loaner bike).
Good Luck.
