Default P400 4x4 owners get in here

hey guys im looking at a 01 P400 4x4 to replace my 2wd bayou as my second quad.

I was wondering on your expierces with this machine. Would you buy it again. Many problems?
What were the problem areas?

The bike i am looking at is very clean and runs excelent. and the only thing i dont like about it is full time 4wd but thats ok.

Will this bike turn 27s laws in the deep thick stuff? i know my P360 would not and i wouldnt try. But ive heard the P400 has more torque down low. If not i would go with 26s.

Later
Chris

The 400's are very reliable machines. Again, the only thing I didn't like about them was all time 4x4. Other than that they are great. A lot more power than the 360's. I don't know about goin with the 27 inch tires. That might be too much for the 400. I bet 25 or 26's will be ok though. You could get some more power out of that 400 if you put an exhaust on it and rejet it. Then it should be able to pull those 27's. Good luck with that atv if you get it.

My dad has had a p400 for about 5 years now and only thing that had to be replace was some u joints. Other than that it is a very reliable machine and it has never bogged in any mudd and that has included mud up to the engine. THey are also very smooth machines but watch the suspension they flip easy on hill because it is so soft. That can be fixed by tightening the suspension. All in all the 400 is a great land cuiser and work horse.

I have an 01, great bike, very few minor problems. They are put together very well, just maintain them and you will be alright. The full time 4x4 and the limited slip front end is no big deal.

The P400 is a much stronger running bike than the 360.

I have the original Prairie, the 1997 model. I haven't had any trouble with it, but it has low mileage. I don't have a problem with it being full time 4X4. I doubt if mine would have enough power to run 27" tires very effectively. It isn't exactly a rocket with 25" tires, but the one you are looking at has more power than mine. In /98 or 99 they redid the cvt and lightened the crank, and made a slightly higher high range and a slightly lower low range etc., so it is more powerful and faster than mine. I think they were very well made.

Slyj is right: get a '99 or newer. The clutch works better and the compression is a point higher. I had a '98 and the newer ones were definately stronger.

I got a 99 P400 and absolutely love it!! ... not ******* yamahas or polaris' , the kawasaki in the dead of winter will start right up and you will be on your way in less than a minute where as the polaris and yamaha take a good 10 minutes warming up while finessing the throttle to keep it running. I have had no problems with mine ( knock on wood) , and the 99 has great power, and i have heard the same thing mentioned in other responses that 99 and up have more power. I will also agree they roll over somewhat easy unless you got a little meat on your bones
