Default First Real Test on my Rebuilt P650...ATV Rodeo Results

Saturday was the first real test for my recently rebuilt 2002 P650. I'm happy to report that the carb rejetting and installation of a water/air separator that I did late Friday night seemed to fix my engine stumbling and oil in the airbox problems. It ran smooth as butter at the local ATV Rodeo.

XC RACE
I'm happy to report that I took home 1st place out of 5 in the XC race (utility class). Unlike the XC races that I normally race in, this event was a one-lap, timed event over a 4 mile XC course. Compared to most of my XC races, this one was a VERY fast course with a few long straight-ways, including one that was a little over 1/4 mile long...you could go as fast as you dared...even after a few practice runs before the race, I'll admit that I chickened out during the race and let off at 55mph when I could have kept on accelerating, but this particular straight-away is pretty narrow and bordered by LOTS of pine trees...what can I say, I'm not as young and fearless as I used to be!

Anyway, I was happy that my P650 was good enuf to beat out a P700 and a BF750 to take 1st in the utility class...but I was also shocked that my times were faster than 3 of the 4 sport quads that raced in the sport class that day. The sport quad class had 2 preditors and 2 modded raptors (if I recall correctly)...The only sport quad to beat my time that day was on a heavily modded raptor...I was impressed with my lil yellow P650 to say the least. As usual, I think my set of 22" wheels helped me out in this race.

SAND DRAGS
I'm also happy to report that I placed 3rd out of 8 in the approx. 300' sand drag race (utility class). In the final round, I was beaten by a P700 and BF750...both were basically stock, including stock tires/rims which are very light. Surprisingly, those light tires were able to hook up well in the wetted down and groomed drag strip. The P700 only beat me by 1 quad length in the final run. My best time of the day was 6.06 and the P700's best time of the day was 5.85 or something like that (keep in mind these are approx times b/c they used stop watches to time the riders). I think I could have kept up with the P700 if I had some stock tires/rims on too...those stockers are much lighter than my 25" bearclaws on c-series rims. I chose not to use my 22" wheels for the sand drags b/c I didn't think I'd get good traction with my rear holeshot tires in the sand...now I regret that decision. The good news was that I beat out another BF750 and a grizzly too. Those quads had some heavy mud tires if I recall correctly and that slowed them down alot. Also, the BF750 that did beat me ran a 6.06 in the final round...which was actually the same time that I ran earlier in the qualifying round, but those earlier times don't count in the final round.

Well, that's my report...I'm very happy with the way my rebuilt P650 ran and I got lots of compliments this weekend on my yellow P650, especially the ceramic coated pipes.

How often do you have to drain the air oil separator or does the oil simply flow back to the crankcase?

Actually, saturday was the very first time that I got to ride with the water/air separator installed and I didn't get a drop of oil in the little trap on the water/air separator...not sure if that was b/c my oil level is now lower than it used to be (used to be completely full and now I have it 1/2 way on the safe mark) or perhaps the separator somehow restricts the air movement just enuf to keep the oil from flowing up the vent tube. In any case, I'll keep an eye on it to see how much oil it collects (if any) with each ride/race.

FYI: Here's a quick pic of me and my yellow P650 during the XC race on Saturday...hot and dusty sums it up nicely!
