Default front gear?

what are the advantages of changing your front gear?
13t?
14t?
any other sizes, what does it do?

A smaller front gear will give you more low end and less top speed. Likewise a larger front sprocket will give you more top speed but a less low end.

Yup,

As Hugh just said, it's the opposite effect for the rear. Smaller in the rear is the same as bigger in the front, but in smaller incriments.
